you, why answer you at all? Yes, I was guilty of this one time, but
I was wrong and you pointed out to me that you wanted me to ask the
entire newsgroup my question so that I would have more than just one
persons word for my question. I mean, it is getting that I feel
sorry for you when I see you post anything, just because I know in
my heart, that there is going to be a some people that will go into
"pit bull mode" and just tear you apart..... But then again, let
them want to know something about ancients, they will ask you, and
you will answer them..... Does not make any sense to me....

It's only a handful of people who do this. The usual suspects. You
point to a truth about it. The expression "Get a life" may be an
online cliche, but it's applicable. I used to get sucked into this
junk, in this newsgroup and others, and then I'd start responding in
kind with my own junk, Pavlovian response. But I think I've finally
(took me long enough) got an effective strategy for keeping the gnats
at bay, using killfiles. Don't like doing it, being a strong proponent
of free speech and open expression, which is why I resisted for so
long, but it seems the better of two evils.

I think these people lash out like they do, trying to sabotage threads
with name-calling and petty, ****y criticisms, for three main reasons:
I enjoy exploring the gray, controversial areas. I like the art of
debate, substantive debate, not ****y flamejunk. And I have much
cooler coins than anyone else on Earth. Oh, and I sometimes make jokes
like this that the intelligentsia misconstrue. All in a day's play.
Thanks for speaking out. I hope your doing so doesn't get you flamed,
but it may. You can probably also expect to get email from the
electronic shut-ins trying to win you over to their side. Pathetic
stuff. I need to get a life here too, I guess, or at least some sleep.
Later.

Roscoe.....Reid's post (a response to himself) was nothing more than a thinly
veiled attack aimed at several posters to this newsgroup, myself included. He
claims that others start "****y fights" and engage in name calling and then he
goes and posts something like this. At last count he had personally insulted
almost 40 posters to this newsgroup.

Reid is an a-hole and most posters here recognize this.

Phil, and the other people that I NOW know that Reid made a personal
attack at, including all AOL users out there....... Yes, I know that
when he does post, there are people (not calling any names) that "to
me" it appears they will attack him at the drop of a hat. Why? I do
not know because I do not read each and every post that is posted
because I just do not have the time. Maybe he does deserve what he
gets. In this post, it was pointed out to me, by private email, that
yes he did direct this post at a few people on this newsgroup
including ALL AOL users. I am now sorry that I did not take more
time to read the post better than I did.... I guess with all that
has happened to me in the past year, I am now looking at life
through different eyes. After you look at death, die on the
operating table and they have to bring you back, you will look at
things differently. So with this, I would like to say, I was wrong
with my first post, I see that now and while I can not take back
what I posted, but I will watch more closely next time that I post
something......
Phil, Yes Sir, I do see that this was a direct attack against you
and a couple of other people, and when he made the
statement: "Some because of their own demons just lie,
making things up."
Well, I do believe that also to be a direct attack against another
person on this newsgroup, (again, no name). All I can say is, I am
sorry.

Of course it was....yet in his response to you he claims he doesn't engage in
"****y flamejunk"...pathetic hypocrite.

All I can say is, I am sorry.

An apology is not necessary. I just wanted to make sure you hadn't fallen
victim to the seduction of the Dark Side. ;-)

Poor Wheeler. He may believe this. This thread was going just fine, no
flames were thrown. At least none that I could see on WEBTV. I saw none
quoted, so I may be wrong, but Reid was the first to respond to HIMSELF.
Since we all know who he was referring to in his second posting, and the
"fact" that he has killfiled them, seems kind of underhanded of him.
So, Wheeler, he brings it on himself. He has done this since I first
started on this group. I too was wondering why everyone got in his face,
NOW I know why. Reid is a 5 yr old, that can turn a computer on,
they learn this in 1st grade, so he is 1 step ahead of the rest of the
5 yo He is the street bullyI doubt he has the guts to do this in
person tho he is the one who is always at the Principles office and can
never just sit still in class. When things are going too smothly, he
just can't help himself. Has to start anything, just to tell everyone he
has KF those who he bashes.
Wheeler, feel sorry for Reid, he really can use it, and he will. Allows
him to tell us all AGAIN who he has KF. And at the same time degrade
them. So very childish, but expected.

My computer skills have nothing to do with this. Neither does my dog's
name or what I had for breakfast this morning. You make the statement
that my computer skills are "limited." Based on? Doesn't matter. I've
never contended I was an expert, but I've been around computers a
while, BBSing well before the Internet explosion, figuring out how to
add Zmodem to ProComm, writing a shareware collection of macros for
XyWrite, writing and desktop publishing the manual for the DOS menuing
program Hard Disk Menu, and being a part-time computer consultant
during the days when 286s were screaming fast machines.

LOL!

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

One of the positive things that people do here and in other online
discussion groups is share information.

The counterpoint to the above is the misinformation that gets
disseminated through online discussion groups. The old caveat applies
about being careful about any information you find on the Internet.
Unlike with print publishing, those putting out information are
typically amateurs, without training or experience in fact checking,
judging the reliability of sources, and so on. And not having editors
review material before publication also decreases the reliability of
the information.

People play expert online, pretending they're lawyers or doctors. Some
people posting from AOL accounts play computer expert. Some look not
to put out accurate information but to promote an agenda -- this is no
different from advocacy print publications -- and you see it in this
newsgroup most blatantly with those who oppose the keeping of
counterfeit coins and who put out counterfeit information. Some like
to think they're bold thinkers, overturning the established wisdom
with clever verbiage while ignoring much of the literature published
about their new paradigms and otherwise failing to review the relevant
evidence. Some because of their own demons just lie, making things up.

But the single most curious thing, to me, about the subject of
misinformation in online discussion groups is the inability or
unwillingness of some to admit it when they're gotten something wrong.
You see this over and over. People argue and argue their points well
beyond reason and common sense, or they stop arguing their points and
start attacking personally those they're debating, or they utter
guttural sounds or otherwise emote noncerebrally, or they stop
responding entirely. Conversely, some of the most refreshing things
you see are statements such as "I hadn't considered that," or "That's
something I didn't know," or "I need to check more into this," or "You
may be right." It reassures that reasonableness is a human trait, even
online, that's not totally extinct, that a meeting of the minds, even
when initially separate or distant, can happen.

Reid, is this (above):

(1) a cleverly-crafted and devious troll post, or
(2) the most gratuitously self-serving piece of naive claptrap to grace this
ng in months?

....or maybe both?

Whatever, it marks itself indelibly as a classic case of projection.

Really!
How can you show your "face" in this forum and complain of "scat reference
deleted flameposts" after writing a piece like that?

(I'm already regretting feeding this troll.)
