Do collectors want better software? What kind of program would
collectors and dealers want that they cant get? I would like to
write one for the industry if there is a demand.

Thank you.

Two of the better-known coin software programs are CoinManage
(www.libertystreet.com) and Coin Elite (www.trovesoftware.com). I
ran thru the trial versions of each, and will probably settle on
CoinManage, if/when I decide to buy.

Hello Eric!
I am keeping track of my collection with CoinManage.
The first version I purchased (that was around 2002) was quite buggy.
Late 2004 I purchased the newer 2004 version and it is quite an
improvement as interface and some new futures.
But again there is one small problem: when you introduce a picture of
your coin and you want to keep the pictures' window in the same size
for all your coins (small/big coins), some coins have horizontal and
vertical lines, just like in a millimetre page. The developer who is a
very nice person said me they know about this problem and they will
fix it in the newer version. Other than that it is indeed a very nice
program. Just a tad time-consuming introducing countries/denominations
they are not included in its database.

PS
Could you please give us some insight about the genealogy software
you've tried ?
Thanks.

I left my genealogy stuff at work. I'll have to get back to you on
Monday about this one. Watch for a new OT post from me, on Monday.

Have a great weekend.

Thanks Eric !
But first I would like to know what exactly this program is doing.
I mean, is it a programme that lets you create a kind of graphic of your
genealogical tree, create links between various persons, introduce pictures
of the persons, etc or a program to search around Internet for relatives,
etc ?

Have a great weekend.

Same to you with many e-Bay wins ;-)

PS
Have you encountered the same problem as me with the CoinManage software
?

Hi Eric,
We're the developers of the NumisEXPERT/ProIII series of software for
coin collectors, coin sellers (dBay, Yahoo, CoinWebListing, etc), and
for professional dealers. We have just released our latest versionsof
both COLLECTOR and DEALER. You can try both free by going to our
portal at www.numisexpert.com and signing in on the BETA right away
(BETA will be ending Monday but you will be able to run the software
for at least 30 days) - we just released it today. The following is a
notice I've posted on some of the chat groups and we have an ad on the
front page of Numismatic News this week:

NumisEXPERT/ProIII - Double your money back!
Take advantage of the most comprehensive, sophisticated, and
functional coin collecting software on the market. We've just
released NumisEXPERT/ProIII COLLECTOR at $100. If you buy it and
don't agree that it significantly improves your collecting ability
and knowledge I personally guarantee you DOUBLE YOUR MONEY BACK -
that is $200.00 retail value in coins, of any coin(s)in my personal
collection of 37,293 (and counting) U.S. coins in my system. You
can check my auctions on eBay (JARESCH) or YAHOO! (janschwenk) to
get a rough idea of what kinds of coins I have.

Our software will make you an expert in U.S. coins. Mr. J.T.
Stanton, author of "Cherrypicker's Guide" calls it "Absolutely
SUPER!" It will help you find valuable coins, possibly even already
in your collection that you didn't know were valuable.

If you want to sell, ProIII automates on-line auctions, and provides
you a full eCommerce site to sell, trade, show, or buy coins.

Some major dealers are signing on soon - you will have fingertip
access -- all in one spot -- of thousands of coins. If you don't
know what you need, the software will analyze your collection and
automatically create your want-lists, then if you give it the OK, it
will go out and help you find them.

Don't like software or think it "intrudes" into "pure coin
collecting"? No problem, don't buy it. Buggy whips are still the
rage, aren't they? But if you want to use all the tools and
facilities of the modern age, if you want to use software of the
quality we write for Fortune 100 companies, then contact me at
to get the software.

By the way, any registered users of our earlier Collector software
get a free upgrade - contact me.
Thanks!

Our family tree stuff is on "Family Tree Maker" which I quit upgrading
at the 11th version and the free software from the LDS web site.
Between the two of them they do most of what I want. I have some
smaller branches of the family (outlaws instead of inlaws and people
who don't want to give up much informaiton) in "Brothers Keeper" which
is a great shareware program that I picked up in the early 90s.

I also have 4 backups that are kept at 4 different locations off site.
When you have records of almost 4000 people you don't want to lose all
that information to a forest fire, earthquake or riot.

You could link your Ghica and Brincoveanu lines back 1400 years to
Romania and Albania and print a tree with www.familytreemaker.com

gogu - See new OT thread for genealogy software.

As far as CoinManage goes, I just used the free trial version for a week
- testing it's features against other programs like Coin Elite, Coin
Keeper, Collect!, Organize Your Coin Collection, etc. I didn't really
get to test out the picture feature. I don't have access to a decent
digital camera, and didn't go thru the effort of scanning a bunch of
coins with the scanner. I just read about what it can do, and thought it
was pretty much what I wanted. I didn't know about the bugs with it. I
just assumed that all the coins would show up at the same size, in the
program. What other bugs did you find with CoinManage?

I did my little 'research' effort about three years ago. I think I'll
have to go thru the effort once again, because there are some new
programs out there (see post from dingodog). There might be progams out
there that are even better for my needs.

If anyone else knows of any good coin collecting software programs out
there that I should test, please let post here.

Done, thank you !

Well, you have a point here.
I don't use a camera to archive my coins because I think a scanner can
deliver far more details.
At a given moment I found myself in a similar situation as you: I had a lot
of coins to scan and the whole task seemed to be a real Golgotha :-)
After I finished scanning all my coins (more than a month and an injured
back:-)), I am applying a simple rule: "coin coming in, coin is scanned in
24 hours" ;-)

I just read about what it can do, and thought it
was pretty much what I wanted. I didn't know about the bugs with it.

Well, as I said is not so terrible and the developer said they know the bug
and they are working on fixing it.
Really nice persons.

I
just assumed that all the coins would show up at the same size, in the
program.

The problem is different:
as you know, the program has a window at the left of the screen where the
pictures of the coins appear.
If you adjust the window to the bigger coin you have, smaller coins will
appear with the grille I mentioned in front of them !
If you adjust the window for the smaller coins, they will look OK but the
bigger ones will again appear with those horizontal and vertical lines !

What other bugs did you find with CoinManage?

At this moment it seems to have no other bugs.
The actual version seems to work pretty OK.
