Capped Bust quarter for type set - ideas?
Having lurked here, and occassionally posted, I've noticed that there are a
few fans of bust coinage. I'd like to ask these people, or anyone else who'd like to chime in, the following... I've been working on a quarter type set for the past year or so. Currently, I have: 1858 Seated Quarter MS-64 (NGC) 1916 Barber Quarter MS-66 (NGC) 1917 SLQ MS-65 FH (PCGS) I'd like to add a Capped Bust quarter to this set. Considering the condition, price, rarity, etc... of the above what would be your recommendation for an example which: 1. Is not astronomically priced ( $1500.00, give or take) 2. Is a good representative (if such a thing can be had )of the capped bust series.. 3. Is, and probably will remain, collectible (ala my SLQ) 4. Is a good representative balance between price, and rarity. Obviously I am just beginning my research into bust coinage, so please be kind . -jim- |

Something in the 1830s in AU55-58 condition would fit those criteria to a T, methinks. Look for one with nice eye appeal and it will co-reside happily with your other quarters. -- Bob |

Due to expense your only UNC option would be the later close-collar strikes, after 1831. You will not be able to achieve much more than MS60 at that price level. I would recommend a really hot looking AU slider. That would give you the option of picking up one of the earlier open collar dates. All bust quarters remain HIGHLY collectable, even the G6s.
