Default Grandfather passed away, value of 1934 $5,000 notes.

Recently my grandfather died and in his safety deposit box were 9
series 1934 $5,000 notes all pretty close to uncirculated and in
sequence. They haven't been folded and they were kept in an envelope.
They are from the "D" district. I was thinking of cashing them at a
bank, but thought I better ask first to see if they are worth more
than face? They have Madison on the front with light green serial
numbers and seal. My grandfather was quite wealthy, so we weren't
surprised that there was some money in his box at the bank. There were
some $1,000 bills, but they weren't in the best shape. We might cash
those, but I want to know about the $5,000. Thanks.

Very rare. I don't have the latest catalog. My 2003 Blackbook lists
$5000 1934 note for $38,000 UNC. You probably can more in an auction.

If you are serious and not just pulling our chain, congratulations. Your
notes are worth a lot more than face value, especially if they are indeed in
sequential serial number order and truly uncirculated. Do nothing to harm
their condition. Handle them as minimally as possible, and keep them safe
from bending. Even the $1,000 notes are worth a premium over face value, no
matter their condition.

Your best bet is to find a reputable banknote dealer to provide grading and
valuation. You could sell on eBay, but you'd be better off consigning them
to an auction house that specializes in US notes.
