Default Rain Man VHS - 33 listed - 2 sold (eBay)

Rain Man VHS listed on eBay Dec 17 thru Dec 31
33 listed - 2 sold

$11.00+ listing fees to eBay

1 sold for $1.99 + $4.50
1 sold for $0.01 + $4.99

The sellers will net $2+ max on their S&H.
1 in 16 of this item sold. On average a seller will have to list this
item 16 times
for one sale. This will cost $5.00+ in listing fees to net $2 or $3
when the tape is sold.

This is an extreme example, but a good of example of eBay sellers who
should
take a look at the numbers before listing ANYTHING for $9.99 or less on
eBay.

Actually, AFAICT, you'll get the same results for just about any VHS
video unless the contents are hard to find on DVD. VHS isn't a very good
eBay item anymore.

I gather there's a movement afoot to encourage eBay sellers to list
their $9.99 or less items on Yahoo!Auctions.

That approach does have some merit, but wouldn't it be better if
corporate Yahoo! did a little promotion of their auctions segment? Do
they even know they have an auctions segment?

According to Alexa, Yahoo! is the number one website. They also report
that just 1% or 2% of that traffic is going to "shopping" so its clear
that the auctions link at the bottom of the homepage isn't doing much
of anything.

Moving these "low end" items to Yahoo should be common sense. But as
you can
see from the "Rain Man" example, there are some very clueless sellers
on eBay.

Yahoo auctions has been integrated with Yahoo Shopping and the Shopping
search.
The search is bringing in new buyers, the listings continue to grow,
and everything
seems to be moving in the right direction.

If Yahoo wants to run some ads/banners, fine with me. Yahoo already
exceeded my
expectations when they integrated auctions with Yahoo Shopping.

I would like to see a comparison between items sold on eBay ($9.99 and
less including S&H) compared to items sold on Yahoo (No Fees).

In most cases you can subtract $2.00 to $2.50 for postage leaving the
seller with $7.50 to $8.00 for his sale. Subtract 50 cents more for
eBay fees (this assumes a sellthru rate of 50% to 70+%) Subtract PayPal

fees in most cases 30 cents + 30 cents.

This leaves the eBay seller with $6.50 to $7.00 from a $9.99 eBay sale.

If the seller is
paying any more than $4.00 per item its pointless to list on eBay.
This is the very best scenario for $9.99 items.

Look at books, videos, DVDs, toys, cards, etc. selling for $5.00
including S&H
(.99 + $4.00 S&H or $2.00 + $3.00 S&H are common scenarios). Subtract
$2.00 postage, 50 cents eBay fees, 45 cent PayPal fees. This leaves the

seller with $2.00
from his $5.00 eBay sale (And assumes best case scenario with a 50% to
100% sellthru).

Move down from a 50% sellthru rate and a 200% mark up and you don't
have to
do any calculations. The only reason you would have to crunch numbers
in this
scenario is to make sure you don't belong to the "Rain Man" club.

Presuming the same terms on Yahoo, the only difference is the
eBay fees of fiddycentz versus Yahoo fees of zero, which leaves
the Yahoo seller with $7.00 to $7.50 from a $9.99 Yahoo sale.
Given a 50% - 70% sellthru rate on eBay versus a 1% - 2% sellthru
rate on Yahoo, I think I'd be quite happy to eat that fiddycentz
and make up for it via the 25x - 30x increase in volume ...

Look at books, videos, DVDs, toys, cards, etc. selling for $5.00

Using the same terms, the Yahoo seller is left with a whopping $2.50
(instead of the miniscule $2.00 via eBay) on the same $5.00 sale, and
with much less volume to show for all his/her work.

Thats best case scenarios or 50% or better sellthru rates. Drop below
40% sellthru
rate and it starts falling apart on eBay. At 25% sellthru rates,
sellers start losing money.

I've sold videos for $10 on Yahoo. The same titles went unsold on eBay
at $5 to $6.
The obvious difference is that you can keep listing on Yahoo until you
have a buyer.

I'm not a coin dealer. If I was selling coins at a 70% sellthru rate on
eBay and was
only doing 2 or 3 sales per week on Yahoo I wouldn't bother.

My best sales are on Yahoo. I get better prices.

I used your numbers. Any "seller" with a sellthru rate of 25% - 40%
would probably be better off going back to flipping burgers at Mickey
Dee's.

I find that hard to believe. Would you care to post some item numbers?

I'd be DELIGHTED with 2 - 3 sales per week on Yahoo. Heck, I'd be
delighted with 2 - 3 sales per MONTH on Yahoo.

My best sales are on Yahoo. I get better prices.

So you sez. I don't believe you, and you refuse to post any proof.

The first coin dealer (gtjbg) is averaging over 50 sales for a month on
Yahoo.

The second coin dealer (cbwj1145) is averaging 80 sales per month with
total sales
of $1,500+ / month.

If you would be "delighted" with 2 - 3 sales per month, I would assume
you would be
a big Yahoo supporter if you were matching their sales.

Default Rain Man VHS - 33 listed - 2 sold (eBay)

The first coin dealer (gtjbg) is averaging over 50 sales for a month on
Yahoo.

The second coin dealer (cbwj1145) is averaging 80 sales per month with
total sales
of $1,500+ / month.

If you would be "delighted" with 2 - 3 sales per month, I would assume
you would be
a big Yahoo supporter if you were matching their sales.

Yahoo User ID: gtjbg (590)
1232 auctions with positive feedback
Past week 31, Past Month 116, Past 6 Months 325

A fine example ... this seller currently has 722 items listed,
5 of which have bids and 717 have no bids. (And of the 5 that
have bids, two are collectors plates, not coins ...). And here
I thought that *my* sellthru rate was bad!

Yahoo User ID: cbwj1145 (2025)
6442 auctions with positive comments by 2030 unique users
Past week: 27, Past Month 66 , Past 6 Months 488

Another fine example ...

1890-CC -MORGAN-BETTER THAN GOLD-*NO/M/RSV* (Nov 24 17:25 2005 PST)
$56.99

This coin would have undoubtedly realized between $75 and $95 on
eBay. Even minus a 10% eBay fee, the seller would have been much
better off financially to sell it there than on Yahoo. In fact,
I wholesaled one of these to another deeler at a show last month
for $80 ... sure glad I didn't list it on Yahoo and get only $57!

1884-S MORGAN -$23,000 IN MS63-**NO/MIN/RSV* (Dec 08 17:17 2005 PST)
$16.25

Why didn't he quote $305,000 in MS67 ... wudda made just as much sense ...

1898 MORGAN *AU*- - -**NO-MIN-RSV** (Dec 14 17:39 2005 PST) $12.51

Wholesale is $15.50 ...

1877-S TRADE DOLLAR *EF-40*-*NO/MIN/RSV* (Nov 23 17:13 2005 PST)
$127.05

Wholesale is $120.00 ... big whoop.

etc.
