Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas To All
Dear Fellow 8-Track Enthusiasts
How is everybody doing tonight?I hope that everybody is doing great tonight. How are the holidays going for all of you,so far? They have been going great for me at the moment.I have gotten my shopping almost done.I only have to get a few more things and that is all. What is everyone doing to get in the holiday mood?I'll tell you all what I have been doing. Last night,I was writing out a whole bunch of Christmas cards in my bedroom and I was listening to some of my holiday 8 Tracks while I did this to eliminate boredom. The 8 Tracks that I was listening to were as follows: Merry Christmas From Brenda Lee Tammy Wynette:Christmas With Tammy Charley Pride:Christmas In My Home Town Lawrence Welk:The Christmas Song The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sings Christmas Carols With the exception of the Charley Pride cart, the other carts were given to me by friends of mine over the years and I just thought that I would give them a whirl.I played them on the old Bradford 8-Track player that I hooked up to my Crosley Nostalgic Styled Stereo with built in turntable, radio, cassette player and CD player/recorder.The carts sounded great with no annoying cross talk from the other programs. The only drawback was there was a buzz from the tape player in itself. But I still enjoyed listening to them while I wrote out the Christmas cards. The Charley Pride cart I have was one that I bought at a Salvation Army thrift shop years ago with a whole bunch of other Charley Pride carts that were actually in new condition and still played great. Aside from that,I also watched on DVD,Frosty The Snowman and Frosty Returns.Though they were on TV last night on CBS,I watched them on DVD so I would not get any commercials while watching them. I want to wish all of you in here a very Merry Christmas and the very best holiday season this year. I also hope that everyone in here has a wonderful evening.Sincerely Frank R.Schoonover |

I was playing my Chipmunk Xmas tape for my Grand kid on my 2XL today . What's Santa's number one Christmas 8 track? Don Ho Ho Ho snip I have the original Chipmunk LP in stereo on red vinyl in mint shape. It's the one that includes "The Christmas Song" and several others that were the rage back in '58. My dad bought it at the local record shop as a gag, and it just happened to be a stereo version. He'd just got his new Shure M3D stereo cartridge to go with his new preamp, second amp and speaker system. I think it wasn't the first stereo record I ever heard, but pretty close to it. As I remember (geez, this was 49 years ago!) the FIRST stereo record I heard was a stereo demonstration disk released by Omega (which had been making 2 track, 7½ IPS stereo tapes since about '56 under the Omegatape brand) and I remember the music being Chabrier's "Capricio España," which two years earlier, RCA and Perry Como had co opted to become the melody for "Hot Diggity (Dog Diggity Boom), which hit the Billboard Top 10 that year. RCA, whether forced by legality or not, actually gives Chabrier label credit on the single! I can't remember the orchestra or conductor of the Chabrier piece, but the audio was quite stunning. I can still remember the near absence of tape hiss, which plagued all stereo tape releases of the day. Later, he got the 2 track release of the same recording, and comparison showed that consumer 2 track releases were indeed noisier than the masters used for the disc. I still have both the disc and the tape. For other Christmas oldies, I have an excellent copy of Glenn Gould playing Christmas favorites with the "Warner Brothers Symphony Orchestra" (a misnomer for a bunch of guys out of Musicians Union Local 47) in Warner's glorious 3 track "direct to master" format. It still sounds stunning to this day, even more so with an excellent cartridge and tone arm. Back in the tape days, we had a Berlant Concertone (we called it a "faux Ampex") and one of Bob Bell's 2 track machines, very rare even then. The Berlant tried to emulate all the proficiency of an Ampex 350/351, but fell rather short in several areas, one being the noise floor and stability of the electronics, as well as heads that wouldn't hold azimuth alignment very well. The Bell deck was a portable, one of Bob Bell's attempts to crack the home hi-fi market. It was unique in that it had room in the head bridge for addition of an extra head, which allowed it to be modified to play either 2 or 4 track, when 4 track reverse became the rage starting around 1960. Not a great machine, but lots of fun. We ran a lot of Audiotape through those machines back in those days, much of which I still have in cans. We also learned in short order than you cannot use ¼ mil Mylar tape on a three motored machine without turning it into cassette tape unless you were VERY judicious with use of the brakes! That's when I learned the time-honored method of reversing the reel motors to slow down the tape to a standstill, rather that using the brakes. Later, I would learn, this was de rigueur in all studios, as brake bands on Ampex transports were not cheap and were a chore to replace and set up. For even more Christmas spirit, look soon for the annual Charlie Nudo family Christmas card! |

As I remember (geez, this was 49 years ago!) the FIRST stereo record I heard was a stereo demonstration disk released by Omega (which had been making 2 track, 7½ IPS stereo tapes since about '56 under the Good reminiscing there dBob. I started looking at records (mostly 45s and the CKY charts) in record stores (Woolworths downtown Winnipeg) in about 1958. We took the trolley bus down Portage Avenue to crowded bustling sidewalks every Saturday. Alone....no parents needed. This at 9 1/2 years old though my sister was almost 12 years old. Anyway, I don't think they even sold LPs. In about 1962 I started looking at LPs half interested though I had nothing but a little suitcase player to spin them with. My first several purchases were Mono as they were cheaper than stereo by several cents and on an early teen budget it counted. Besides the player only had one tiny little speaker so no point, even though the jackets assured one that playing the stereo record on a mono player would not adversely affect it. There are some collectible LPs I see on lists where the mono version is worth more than the stereo version. I am guessing this is so because in the transition time stereo outsold mono thereby creating a scarcity. Or, possibly the stereo effect was so gimmicky audiophiles now prefer the mono version? |

Or, possibly the stereo effect was so gimmicky audiophiles now prefer the mono version? snip No, the latter's usually the case...scarcity. This wasn't the case with the early stereo era releases, when monaural outsold stereo by multiples. Not much later, I seem to remember around 1968 onward, stereo almost always outsold the mono, as stereo players became the norm. I remember when the labels started hyping "mono compatible" on their records, which was a real crock. To what they were referring what that many early stereo releases, when played back on mono equipment, would be unlistenable due to phase/time cancellation. This problem was painfully obvious in many "mixed down from stereo" classical releases of the era. That's why there were usually two master mixes...one for the singles and mono LPs, and one for the stereo. By the end of the 1960s, "mono compatible" stereo masters and disks were the norm. That's one reason that later mono disks that were outsold by their stereo counterparts are so desirable to collectors...the final mix product is completely different than the stereo version. A good example of these would be the EMI Beatles releases. One instance of this was when the labels started releasing 45s in stereo...a non-compatible stereo 45 played, say, on an AM radio station, would sound like crap due to the phase cancellations involved. It was this compatibility issue that led many producers to use simple "ping pong" 3 channel stereo mastering, right off the old 3 track Ampex machines, rather than true stereo mixes. With "ping pong," there would be no phase/time cancellation problems, as all the audio would either be in one channel or the other, or if from both, effectively in phase. Getting back to "mono compatible" discs...of course, the old, stiff monaural cartridges, tracking as they did at oodles of grams, would wipe out (usually) the outer (right channel) track after only a few plays, rendering the disc useless for any critical listening due to tons of distortion and a completely missing top end. Most mono players sold in the late '60s on had a "stereo compatible" ceramic cartridge which were compliant enough to track the 45-45 stereo groove wall without completely destroying it in a couple of passes, but only had two output terminals. I seem to remember Sonotone starting to provide "stereo trackable" mono "flipper" ceramic cartridges somewhere around 1965 or so, and they replaced the old mono styles completely shortly thereafter. |

the truth about "DeserTBob"
To all who may read this at any future date:
Everything "DeserTBob" is saying, is a complete falsehood. "DeserTBob" is an unemployed illegal alien from California. He was a former Bell Systems employee who was fired from his job- he faked an injury to get disability- so now he sits home and trolls the internet, harassing people- for lack of anything else constructive to do. "DeserTBob" bought 2 items from "66fourdoor" on Ebay at one time. One was an 8-track alignment tape- the other was a VHS movie tape. "DeserTBob" was unhappy with the items, the seller agreed willingly to issue a full refund, once the items were returned. "DeserTBob" returned the alignment tape and received a full $40 refund. "DeserTBob" kept the VHS tape because in reality, there was nothing wrong with either item- and the movie tape was a rare out of print movie, otherwise unavailable. (it has since been re-released on DVD). The returned alignment tape was later resold to another buyer on Ebay, who left positive feedback for it. "DeserTBob" then left a negative feedback for the seller, even though he got a full refund- "DesertBob" has continued to harass the seller and seller's family ever since, for over 3 years now. This is nothing new to "DeserTBob"- rather, it's way of life for him- he also purchased (8) tapes from another seller for ONE CENT each, only to leave the seller 8 negative feedbacks, stating "not worth a penny". Eventually a large quantity of complaints started flooding Ebay, concering "DeserTBob" and his auction harassment. Ebay then banned Bob's Ebay username, which was "VOXPOPPER". "DeserTBob" then returned to Ebay using a second name, calling himself "XCALIBER44"- and started once again harassing Ebay sellers' auctions. He was again reported to Ebay, and "XCALIBER44" was also banned. These current slander/libel against Ebay sellers by "DeserTBob" are completely unfounded- if you check the seller's feedback, you'll find they have 99.9% positive feedback, with only 2 negatives in 6 years. "DeserTBob" simply has an axe to grind, for being banned from Ebay himself. Furthermore, "DeserTBob" is decidedly anti-American, anti-USA, hates the military, and is basically a socialist-communist-liberal left- wing kook. He fears and despises anyone religious in any way, and he also doesn't believe in God. "DeserTBob" once posted a comment on Usenet that said "**** Christmas". He can't accomplish anything himself, so he tears down other good Americans who are out there, trying to make a living. He goes through a yearly holiday depression and attacks everyone on the internet moreso during holiday seasons- he has no family to speak of, and obviously suffers from not being loved by his mother enough, as a child. |
