They phoned me 7/21 to let me know I needed to join NGC. The lady on
the phone was most helpful and gave me a temporary submitter number
so the coin wouldn't be held up by the paperwork.

On Aug 19, the Washington arrives. I guess NGC had already shipped!
It's now completely white, no trace of toning at all and in an NGC 68
slab. I looked at it under 30x and I could see no traces of what I
KNOW was done. Excellent work. Alas, my camera is out on loan and
I've mailed that coin back to the original owner. He may comment and
post photos if he so chooses. They returned the ANACS label from the
slab as well.

Bruce

How does one qualify and what was one need to do to become an authorized
NCS/NGC submitter?

When a coin that has been "conserved" gets placed in an NGC slab, does the
label indicate that it has been conserved?

ya have to sign up for their Collectors Society, $99, and get 4
submissions for free

nope, no indication whatsoever

Thanks. I'm giving it some serious thought. I have a few coins that need
some "conservation". Including a PCGS MS-64 Albany that, IMO, is butt
ugly. :-) I wonder what would happen if I had the thing "conserved" by NCS
and then resubmitted it to PCGS. Would they body bag it?

For NCS, just go to their web page or phone them and they'll send you a packet
with everything you need. I had my packet two days after I made my phone call.
For NGC, if you're an ANA member it's automatic. They print the applications in
almost every edition of the Numismatist. And if you get into a crunch, they'll
issue a temporary number just to keep things moving. You do not have to be an
NCS member to submit to NGC or vice versa, but if you want NCS to send the coins
across the hall when they're done you'll need to be an NGC member too.

No. I looked at 30x at Bob's coin where I KNEW the bad toning was. Carefully. At
various angles. I could see no evidence of their work. So I'm not sure it needs
to be labeled that way. Regardless, it'll never happen. Dealers would have the
coins returned to them raw and then resubmit to avoid that label.

For my next experiment: We all know that if you dip a coin one too many times,
you'll destroy the luster. I wonder how many times a coin can be conserved
without that happening? I asked NCS, and while they wouldn't discuss with me the
various techniques they use, they said that should never be a concern. What i'm
going to do is dip a coin lightly, then put it in an envelope to tone ugly.
Dipped coins tone uglier and quicker than undipped has been my experience. Then
I shall send it into NCS to remove the ugly toning. When it comes back, if it
doesn't show bad luster, I'll dip it lightly once more and retoned it. Then back
it goes. We'll see what it looks like.

Thanks for the in depth answer. And good luck with your experiment. Let us
know how it turns out.

Here's the full progression of my test coin:

It's finished its journey, having passed through all of the major
certification services. Like I've said, it's just one data point, and
you can draw whatever conclusions from its experience you may like.

Bob,

Very interesting. How do you grade the coin?

I think in pure technical terms it's a 67 -- ANACS got it right. The
yellow blotches that were on the coin before NCS "conserved" it didn't
do the eye appeal particularly well, which is probably why ICG and PCGS
gave it a 66. I think it's still a 67, and NGC swung a little high on
it. It is my opinion that NGC is a little too loose with moderns -- the
market bears this out, at least for this species. One would be lucky to
get $20 for an NGC 68 in the open market, while ICG 68s have sold for
more than this. (Obviously, PCGS 68s do as well. As far as ANACS, I've
never seen an ANACS 68 for sale, but then again, there are only five of
them (I have one).)

Bottom line, for me -- it was a yucky 67 before the cleaning, a nice 67
afterward.

Thanks for the follow up Bob. It makes for an interesting progression
through the services.

Cools, thanks for posting this.

You have done us all a great service. But I am curious as to how ANACS
was able to enlarge that coin.

Just one of those special ANACS features :-D. But seriously, I scanned
that one at work, and must've had the settings set differently. I didn't
realize it until I had already sent the coin along to Bruce, otherwise I
would've rescanned it at home.
