U.S. Sen. Harkin: Praises passage of act to honor national parks on quarters

HARKIN PRAISES PASSAGE OF ACT TO HONOR
NATIONAL PARKS ON QUARTERS

Legislation will keep jobs in the Cedar Rapids
area

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA)
today praised the passage of the America's
Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin
Act of 2008. The bill will help keep jobs at
Cedar Rapids' PMX plant that were created in
2005 by increasing the production of $1 coins.

PMX produces the metal sheets that become dollar
coins, quarters, and dimes. The legislation,
which Senator Harkin strongly supports, must be
signed by the President before it becomes law.

"I am pleased that Congress passed the National
Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act, which honors
national parks and sites in every state,"
Harkin said. "Not only will this bill keep
good-paying jobs in Cedar Rapids, but it will
also promote historical treasures in Iowa and
across the country."

The bill requires the quarters, which will
be issued beginning in 2010, to have images
of one national site from each state, the
District of Columbia and territories of the
U.S. The U.S. Treasury will produce five
quarter designs each year.

They can get away with THIS, and yet they can't stop making pennies??
Yuck!!!!!!

Wonderful (NOT). Enough of this already Congress. There are too many
coins and too many designs. I guess I will vote with my wallet and just
stop buying all the sets I have been from the U.S. Mint. This program
is unwanted and unneeded. Next we will start issuing quarters for
sports teams, local politicians and anything else the Congress thinks
they can get payback for. I had really hoped to see a regular quarter
again after the Territorial Quarters program.

Perhaps this newest program will be such a money loser for the
Government that it will get canceled before it gets too far. I can only
hope and will do my part.

Next program that will last 629
years:http://www.theonion.com/content/node/31003

If this program was begun in 2006, as the article states, the pennies are
apparently being released secretly only in the counties they feature, with
the stipulation that they can only be distributed in change by local
businesses. To assemble the whole set, one will have to travel to each of
the 629 counties and shop at a local business to obtain examples. Or
(gasp)
trade with other collectors. "Collect 'em ALL!!" I foresee still more
buffalos coming. A 21-page album should handle the complete set.- Hide

Every article in "The Onion" is as factual as you analysis of coin
issues.

__________

You rarely display a sense of humor or an interest in light sarcasm here, so
I can only presume you mean it when you say The Onion's 2006 claims about
those 629 county cents is factual. Otherwise, why would you have botherrd
to insert the link to it, except maybe out of habit? At least my opinions
and analysis on various coin issues are always expressed in print, like most
others here, rather than via impersonal links and chides that people already
should have researched and discovered the information for themselves.

You're not as funny as The Onion. 3,143 counties , 629 YEARS, not counties.

How much do Canadian $1 and $2 coins weigh compared to a Canadian
quarter? The weight ratio for US Dollars to quarters is 7:10, so just
wondering how that compares to some other countries?

Hmm. 3,143 coins x 2 for P+D = 6,286 divided by 36 cents per Dansco
page equals 174.6 pages. And in 100 years the coins would be worth
$62.86.

According to Charlton, the Canadian quarter weighs 4.4g, the loonie
7g, and the twoonie weighs 7.3g

take care,

Now, if they can do 50 (or whatever) different dollar coin designs and

An animal coin series would probably be quite popular, not by coin
collectors, but by all the pet lovers in the US. It would not have to
be Famous Dogs either, just breeds. That way they could do cats too.

No. I would rather have it be famous dogs. The main purpose for
issuing famous dog coins, is to honor Balto. The sled dog that save a
bunch of people by delivering a syrum from Anchorage to Nome Alaska to
cure an outbreak of diphtheria. There is actually a Balto statue in
Central Park in New York.
