"Libertadum Defendum" ??
Does this ring a bell with anyone? I had someone call me today, saying
they had a piece dated 1787, copper (or similar) with an Indian on the front, with a legend (on the obverse) of "Libertatum Defendum"? I never heard of such a piece...I told him it was probably a token or medal, but I really didn't know. I'll probably have a look at it this weekend, but meanwhile... Anyone know what this might be? TIA, ...Tom |

I'd need to see a picture, but it could be Colonial Coinage of New York. In
1787, they had a coin with an Indian on the front with similar words. They had 3 styles that had the NY Coat of Arms, an Eagle sitting on a globe, or George III. What is on the reverse side of this coin? Beware though, there are copies of these coins out there (without the value). Bob "LRC-Tom" wrote in message oups.com... Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks, guys...I'll try to get a look at it this weekend. I'll
definitely try to determine whether it's a copy, which is what I expect it will be. ...Tom |

It's "Liber natus libertatem defendo" = I defend Liberty, who was born free. Good thing to remember in the present time, as well as to remember how easily lost it can be! Isn't 1787 a tad late for George III?

Aladdin Sane wrote: Isn't 1787 a tad late for George III? Nope, he died in 1820. Just in the news this week was that his insanity may have actually been due to being poisoned. Guess that they got some of his hair which showed high levels of arsenic. Of course in those days lots of aristocrats took small doses of the poison to build up a resistance to it. |

I think the idea is that it is a little late for -=New York=- to have
a George III portrait, you know, kind of after the declaration of Independence & all. Lee C. On 23 Jul 2005 09:09:45 -0700, "Jud" wrote: Aladdin Sane wrote: Isn't 1787 a tad late for George III?
