Missing my friends here -- so an attempt to get discussion going
Hello all --
Rather than quietly regretting the silence here, I thought I'd try to float *something*, at least -- an old post on my blog about the U.S. George Rogers Clark commemorative issue of 1929: http://mcgees.org/l/grci I have a picture of the stamp at the site, information about the plates for the issue, some beginners' information on intaglio printing and specialization in collecting, and a bit of exchange in the comments feed. Any of that prompt some discussion here on RCSD? That specific stamp; or U.S. commems; or frame-and-vignette issues; or plate block collecting; or inheritors of collections wanting to sell a single unused modern commemorative; or postal souvenirs; or intaglio printing; or specializing in single stamps; or ANYTHING? Related cinderellae from Rodney? Bizarre segues onto other topics by Victor? ;-) Anything from lurkers who otherwise don't speak up? Here's hoping.... -- Joshua H. Here's hoping.... -- Joshua H. McGee Los Angeles, California, USA, Earthhttp://www.mcgees.org-- Hello: I think we all feel that 'our hobby' is in a slow death spin, and we can't find ways of saving it. I dont mean to be so odd or cold, but who am I going to 'will' off my collection to when I die and pass on? Who will lovingly enjoy the issues I paid good money for, chased and put into my book with loving care on a snowy night? I care about my collection, but I take mine out once a month to look and feel them. I dont mean any harm to my collection, or even think of selling it, and who would want it. Like yourself you have put all your life on one issue, my favorites are Russian Space Stamps and Belgium Railway stamps. Odd but I lived in many penny boxes to fill those two parts of my collection or spent many a hour doing research and guessing what was next. I take off my old hat to you for your love of one stamp, and as I take out my collection of stamps that have been with me for over 55 years, I will be glad to be counted as a STAMP COLLECTOR. jim |

Thank you -- and my hat's off to you as well. The "penny box" rings true. My other main focus is Machins by postmark. I sort Machin-only kiloware for my examples, and my current yield is roughly one stamp to expand my collection for every pound on- paper. That provides the inexpensive thrill-of-the-hunt enjoyment of collecting that has always been important to me. -- Joshua H. McGee Los Angeles, California, USA, Earth http://www.mcgees.org -- |

Hi All,
I am in the same position as Rien. I only collect three countries in South America. Doing work for a dealer categorizing Cebtral and South America stamps I am most familiar with those areas. Therefore, like Rien, If I see a post that I can answer I will try to help out. Other than that if I will read any interesting post. Jerry B |

McGee Los Angeles, California, USA, Earthhttp://www.mcgees.org-- Hello josh: I have been lurking on this forum for ages, but I do think we in general could help each other in thier interests, such as Machin's which I have a sheet full but dont know much about them, except what I have seen on the net. So many colors, so many variations and who is the expert with them? If I have anything you need let me scan what I have and send it to you. Helping each other accumulate knowledge, so everyone else would have it as well. I was sent kio-ware from Australia, I dont collect that one, unless it fits into my ancient books, I stop getting supplements seeing it costs too much. So I get ancient stamp books and stop collection when the pages end. So my collection stops mid 1960's. If I can I wont mind helping anyone that wants the data, scans of stamps that will fill my data base of say my Russian Space collection, or even your collection of one stamp. I know I have it, but never looked to see what plate block number it had. (think of this, when you have a chance) Single we die a death everyday, together we can gather strength and help each other, we are in a death throw now, few new collectors are being made and we are not fostering the young to enjoy the hobby of kings. |

One such is the studies of the Line Engraved issues of Great Britain. One of the projects there is to find and scan the missing impressions taken fro the imprimatur sheets. These are then added to a photo database and measured according to the Fisher-Brown system. Those measurements are then logged into an searching Index and also a 'corregenda' table for the owners of the F/B books. At this point over 95% of the LE stamps can be plated, Blacks, Blues and Reds. With that, and independent studies of repairs and plates [some of which will soon be reflected in SG's Specialized catalogue] it's a lively area. There are several Yahoo groups doing detailed *discussions on period material, the KGV group is well into the shades. My only problem with this NG is that I'm not a 'general' or even US collector and so have little interest in the topicals, or most postings. I also can contribute little as my library is 99.44% GB [NOT Commonwealth, just the 'Isles']. As said before, If *see a post on GB, I'll try to help, OTW, it's scan the headers and depart.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Hello: Me again! Dare tell me what interest groups are doing Machin's at all. I am new with this large issue, and I need any help to understand this great issue. jim |

Although I have let my memberships in both lapse (having moved around the country a great deal of late) my favorite study groups a Machin Collectors Club http://www.machins.org/ Modern British Philatelic Circle http://www.mbp-circle.co.uk/ The former's "QEII Specialised Definitives Catalogue" is simply amazing. Now that I am resettled, I plan to renew my memberships in both groups. -- Joshua H. McGee Los Angeles, California, USA, Earth http://www.mcgees.org -- |

There's a specialized catalogue for just the Machins - you'll have to google for it as I don't collect past 1971. To keep this thread going is a great idea, and I have enjoyed your comments and I have been busy as well. I have got my show-guard mounts out and mounted all my Russian Space collection, so that I can enjoy it for the rest of my life. I know it is trivial, but I have over 200 space stamps and as you already know Russia(Soviet Union) is no more. I like what I do for it, I would never think of selling it, but I know the feelings of stamp collectors that put thier life into thier works. I am glad I am counted on this thread. jim |

[I think that's right] Came in a fancy wallet 'presentation'.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Hello: I have only a whole page of the Soyuz-Apollo mission, I dont remember Gemini ever getting to the Soyuz at all. I have a large collection of space related stamps from all over the world, and know a lot about flights that I remember, seeing I was a teen-ager back then, and money was plentiful. Now I try to keep what I have, make things last and get to a large show once every year. ROPEX in Rochester is pretty big, and in the 80's I went to one in Toronto. Sputnik was pretty big, Soviet's were always out doing us, and as soon as we got to the moon, thier stamps for space slowly ended. I could go on and on for this exciting part of my life, jim |
