As a soon to be old fa*t, I grew up when plastic was synomnous with
cheap and low quality. Generally I don't like plastics of any sort for that reason.
(old mind set).

The idea of plastic money makes me cringe.

I'm of two minds on this. The practical part of me likes the idea a lot
for the reasons stated in the article. The coin collector part of me
hates it because it would make even more permanent (is that a
redundancy?) the existence of paper dollars, thus continuing to put a
severe damper on the use of dollar coins.

OTOH, for $1, the cost of reprogramming all of those bill acceptors to
recognize a 'plastic' $1 note would be so high that that denomination
would likely not be done, or finally, as with Australia, dropped for the coin.

I can see doing $10 and up as part of future new designs, though, as the
USA public is getting accustomed to the redesign 'cadence'. I am a bit
leery of making $5s out of polymer, though, and would seriously study a
coin for it should such a change be needed.

LOL! to *most* of the s-h-u-d-d-e-r-i-n-g responses to this proposition.

(Posting from Sydney, to set the scene.)

Embrace the future, folks, or be left with your butts in the gutter.

How many of you:
* use a horse-driven conveyance as your principal vehicle?
* prefer a crystal set to a PLL radio receiver?
(for daily use)
* use a typewriter rather than a WP?
(subset to that)
- use WordStar v4 (a *killer* app) rather than a current GUI WP?
- (insert any number of *good* software upgrades)
* eschew quartz crystal accuracy in favour of pendulums and/or invar-built
jewel-mounted super-delicate and relatively inaccurate clock/watch
mechanisms?
* pay your bills with silver dollars or gold liberties?
and so on, ad barfinitum.

Yes, I like horses. I used to have fun building xtal sets (and lots of
bigger, better ham gear), I still own a typewriter, my main household clock
is a weight-driven, pendulum-regulated beast -BUT- I set it from the PC. I pay
my bills online. I drive a fuel-injected computer-regulated motorcar.

Get a grip, folks. Try to remove yourselves from the pejorative associations
with the word "plastic". What would your motorcar look like sans plastic?
Your PC? (Or do you post telepathically?)

Some facts:

Plastic money is not *that* slick and glossy. Yes, it is slicker than paper,
(*especially* that fur-ball known as a year-old BEP note) but it has a more
matte feel than, say, cling-wrap. The contrast between the "matte-ish" feel
of the body of the note and the truly slick transparent "watermark" panel is
proof of this.

http://mendosus.com/5bucks.html shows our $5 with a link to the $10.
Don't be put off by the flamboyant and colourful designs. I'm sure the BEP
could tone yours down to a mono(duo?)chromatic statement if charged to do so.

The texture is pleasant, not shiny/slick. Smooth would be a better word.

They don't take up more room in your wallet (or not so that I'd notice).
On the very rare occasions when I have to carry a large number of notes (40
is "large" by my standards) they present no more of a problem than did the
cotton/paper notes. If you're a barbarian, you can fold them, perfectly
easily.

Its coming, folks. Get used to it.

The Royal Australian Mint sells UNC plastic banknotes at face (+ shipping,
'natch), so if you'd like to try:
http://mintissue.ramint.gov.au/minti...p?code=9915501 (this like
for the $5 - other available too.)

More info on our plastiques:
http://www.rba.gov.au/currencynotes/

OTOH, one could just express a dislike without really knowing what the stuff
is like. This is Usenet, after all.

I guess its just like metric conversion:
"Why don't they just wait 'til all the old farts have died off, then go
metric."

Oh, and one more nitpick...

Its not "money" that is the root of all evil, its the *love* of money.

Scott, are you saying you want to make people *have to* use dollar coins,
even though they have shown that with a choice of both they overwhelmingly
prefer the paper version? As a coin collector, you should salivate over the
scarcity of dollar coins in circulation, giving them the same aura or
special status as new half dollars. Otherwise they'd simply be as boring as
the dollar bill.
