Default Will the U.S. ever phase out the $1 Bill?

Has anyone heard any news on when or if the $1 bill may be replaced by
the $1 coin?

The BEP has told me that the Treasury has stated several times that
"the $1 note and $1 coin will co-exist" yet Fred Shecter told me that
there should possibly be a $1 bill phase-out in plan, for possibly
2010.

So, when do you guys think that the $1 bill would be phased out, if
ever? Do you think the $1 bill will ever be phased out?

Haven't we had the choice of which one to use for almost 40 years? Isn't
that long enough for an unofficial survey of public preference?

Yes. One day.

There was a rumor in 1971 that rags were going to be phased out. Some
areas of the country had a run on dollar bills because of the
anticipated removal due to the anticipated circulation of the Ike
dollar. That rumor continued through the 70s and finally died after
Suzie took a dive in the early 80s. Here we are, 40 years later, and
still we have those nasty FBI-RDs.

It is not an even choice though. Other than going to a bank or buying
something from a vending machine that gives change in $1 coins most
people do not get $1 coins in change so as to have a choice of whether
to use coins or bills.

It's even enough when you consider that most of the pocket change we receive
comes from merchants who decide what coins to stock in their register in
order to make change. If dollar coins ever were considered more useful and
practical by customers and merchants, they would be included in the coin
tray by now and maybe even handed out instead of dollar bills. As long as
it is given a choice and a voice, the public continues to prefer the dollar
bill.
