i have an ~18th century book that i'm tempted to destroy...
i just remembered that upstairs, somehwere in a box, i'm sure that i
have an 18th century book that i'd forgotten about for several years... i don't remember what the book is or the exact date, i'd have to dig it out, but i think it's from around the 1720s or earlier... I also think it's in relatively good condition, actually, i remember it being in extremely good condition considering how old it is; i've barely touched it over the years.. it puzzles me how it's still there despite all those years and decades and centuries and i feel an impulse to go upstairs, fetch it, and then ceremoniously destory it... i wonder what it'd feel like afterwards... |

I love that word "DESTORY", I think we should campaign for its inclusion in the next Oxford Dictionary. It could be used for describing books that have pages missing, or where text has been marked. Thanks so much for a wonderful word Mike. http://www.stores.ebay.co.uk/aaaworldofbooks |

Books are inanimate objects which are inacapable of feeling anything. Maybe, but I once had a book with a bookworm in it, and the book looked bored to me. -- Jon Meyers [To reply, lose your way.] |

Send it to me, and I'll adopt it for you until you get over your bibliocidal feelings... Huronia |

Destory Bibliocidal [snip] How to make the guys that make Oxford's dictionary accept them? I have a feeling that "bibliocidal," or "bibliocide," wouldn't make the grade, except perhaps as an example of jocular usage under the entry for -cide. This suffix is reserved for the killing of living things, which a book is not (as noted earlier in this thread). There's already a serviceable term for "the destruction of books": biblioclasm (on the model of iconoclasm), making our OP a would-be biblioclast. OTOH, Googling "bibliocide" brings up about 250 hits, showing that the term is in use beyond this forum. -- Jon Meyers [To reply, lose your way.] |
