A stack of Irish pounds - help
Hi,
I am a coin collector and know nothing about banknotes. However, I just came across a small hoard of Irish Pound notes. I'd like to get some idea of what's the best thing to do with them all. Here's a rough description of what I have: Around 125 (series B?) Irish (Central Bank of) 1 Pound notes in either Unc or almost Unc condition. All are from 1989 - last year of issue (according to some stuff on the web). Around 50 or so are dated 17-07-89 with consecutive serial numbers The rest are dated 12-04-89 with groups of consecutive serials of 25 or so each. Also in the "hoard" a 1. Ten consecutive 5 Pound notes, Unc, dated 29-09-89 2. A few 10 Pound notes all but one well circulated (1988-1990) 3. Two well circulated 50 Pound notes - 1982 My guess is that the 50 Pound and circulated 10 pound notes should be cashed in (not sure how outside of Ireland). The crisp 1s, 5s and 10 must have some value above face. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Alex |

Here's a rough description of what I have: Only the uncirculated and nearly uncirculated will give you more than face value. Consecutive numbers might give you a slight premium, but I think it will be very small (I think that in Europe banknote collecting is in general not done by serial number). For the remainder you might try to sell them to collectors at face value, but I doubt you will find many takers. I do not know whether there are in the US exchange offices that will exchange out of date but still redeemable banknotes. -- dik t. winter, cwi, kruislaan 413, 1098 sj amsterdam, nederland, +31205924131 home: bovenover 215, 1025 jn amsterdam, nederland; http://www.cwi.nl/~dik/ |

Thanks for the reply.
One more question: If I do decide to try selling these, what's the best way/place? .. Alex BTW. remove 23 in address to reply directly "Dik T. Winter" wrote in message ... If you're just after getting rid of them at face -- you might try a local coin shop. Many shops also deal with small lots of of "face value" stuff like this. If I were going to Ireland anytime soon, I'ld buy them from you! Padraic. Alex BTW. remove 23 in address to reply directly "Dik T. Winter" wrote in message ...
