Well, i hooked the amp to a regular turntable to see if the sound went
away and it was still there. *I pulled the front from the bottom of
the machine and found that both sub-woofers had the outer foam ring
disintegrated. *Now I need a set of speakers. *They are 25 ohm 10" so
may be a little hard to find. *Found lots of 12" on Ebay but no 10's.
I'm beginning to wonder if this thing is worth it.

You don't need new speakers, lot's of places will repair yours for a lot
less than new ones, and you don't know the frequency response of the old
ones so you won't know what new ones to buy. *It makes a huge
difference, always stick to the original speakers when possible. *Even
if the cones are all torn apart they still rebuild them.

I just replaced the foam surrounds on a set, my first attempt myself,
and they turned out great. *Lots of DIY foam kits on ebay.
Tony

Tony,
I did not know that you could buy a kit to do that. You are right
there are plenty of kits on Ebay. There is also a guy that will
refoam a set for $65. I found a set from an R82 model at
jukeboxparts.com for $65 plus shipping so I'm going that way. All of
his speakers from R81 models had the same problem as mine. I think
what I might do is buy the kit and refoam the set I have just to see
how hard it is.
This group seems to be the place to go for Jukebox info. I'm learning
some things I needed to know.

My main passion is Pinball machines so I spend a lot of time on RGP
which is a fantastic Google group.
Thanks,
Bob

All the speakers with a foam surround have the same problem, some just
faster than others. Personally, I'd go with new surrounds so I know
they will last a while. No way of knowing how long the used ones will last.

They all fail, with the foam surrounds, even faster in a tropical
climate.

In some Rowe machines, (R-84 from memory) they had a paper surround
rather than foam, these
don't come apart like the foam, but the cone does sag with time, and
can make scratching or scraping noises due to the
voice coil being out of alignment with the magnet, and scraping on it
as the coil moves in and out, due to the sagging.

This is a simple fix though, you just turn the speaker upside down
(180 degrees) and let it sag "back" to where
it was before.

Usually due to the length of the wires and position of the terminals,
it is necessary to swap the left
and right speakers over before rotating them or the wires won't
reach.
