Coin throwing --- Eight arrests after football game
Hello
On the story below. I have been reading about sports fans throwing coins at players, fans, and game officials for some time now. I just don't understand why you would throw your money away. You would think that in a recession, every coin counts. The basic formula for "instant asshole" is still the same for some people. "Just add alcohol"! I have not seen this in the United States yet. ------------------------------------- FROM: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...ds/7837115.stm Page last updated at 09:29 GMT Monday, 19 January 2009 Eight arrests after football game Eight people were arrested after scuffles broke out inside and outside Birmingham's football ground following a Championship match on Saturday. Police said a number of stewards were injured following the game between Birmingham City and Cardiff City. Seats were also damaged inside the St Andrews ground and coins thrown at officers, West Midlands Police said. Three of the people arrested for public order offences came from South Wales while five were from Birmingham. Two people were bailed pending further enquiries, four were fined and one was reprimanded. A 28-year-old was charged with being drunk inside a football ground and was bailed to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on 26 January. ... |

Despite the economic situation, I predict that you will continue to find cents and likely even nickels still strewn about on the ground, left there with disdain by the people who dropped them, and waiting for people like you and me to bend down and pick them up. Alcohol may very well be the lubricant that causes coins to fly out of fans' hands toward the players, but not the cause of coins ending up on streets and sidewalks. And I'll leave it to your imagination as to why ballpark beer vendors serve their wares in paper cups rather than in unopened cans. James |

They have plastic bottles now, too. I remember an old football game from the 80s where a kicker was just about to kick the winning field goal and he was hammered with snowballs. I think it was either at Giants Stadium or the Dawg Pound in Cleveland. |

James- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Hey, down in Brazil in the secondary leagues in the provinces, the crowd often urinates into plastic bags and throw them on the field when somebody plays "football" badly. That's why the lower tier of the stadium are often empty! Thrown coins are bad, but much nicer than certain other things that could be done. oly |

"I have not seen this in the United States
yet." The coin throwing is a European soccer thing at the present time, part of the "hooligan" culture surrounding the sport. It has gotten out of hand in the past few years and the soccer leagues are treating it as a serious problem with criminal charges being filed and some people banned from the stadiums. |

A referee was hit in the head with a glass bottle a few years ago during an NFL game, I suspect it had been smuggled into the game. I don't recall if they ever caught the person who threw it. |
