According to the Central bank of Ireland, the reason for the short
life of Irish notes may be that we do not tend
to carry wallets and do not take care of our notes when socialising in
bars and restaurants. Our notes get used more often in an evening as
we pay for each drink separately. In mainland Europe drinks are paid
for at the end of an evening which reduces circulation and wear and
tear.

that was what the ECB replied. Of course some of those figures are
extrapolations, as he explains ...
