From this article: "Forged banknotes worth at least 9m euros ($11.6m)
were seized. "

This is from the BBC web site, so why did the article recalcuate the
amount in dollars, rather than pounds?

A good point indeed! Well spotted.

It probably sounds more sensational converting €9m to $11.6m (escalating
the figures involved if not the value) than saying £6.3m.

....but that is just the cynic in me. :-)

I've wondered the The Who (a British group) titled a song "I can see for miles"
instead of "I can
see for kilometers"

(smile face here).

UK road signs are still in miles, as are vehicle speedos, with km in
smaller numbers on the dial.

The performance of a vehicle is still given as "0 to 60 mph" or "0 to 62
mph", the "62" being some kind of km per hour equivalent. Billy

Keith Moon was always a little bit more `off planet' than the rest of
the band although Pete Townsend came a pretty close second. Kind of like
two space cadets. I'm sure with the help of the substances they were
so fond of they could (on occasion) could see for parsecs and parsecs.

The song was written prior to decimalisation in the UK, before joining
the then EEC and at a time when you could still legally buy things in
pounds and ounces, pints and gallons, inches feet and yards.

Strange as it may seem we still measure distance in the UK by the mile
and we still drink beer by the pint (although some would prefer the
gallon measure for beer).

I wish we still had our pre decimal currency though. Like the music of
the same era, it was far more interesting than the crap we have now. ;-)

possibly because dollars are still the reserve currency of the world (for
now) and many countries can convert the amount easily. Not to mention the
fact that $11 mil is a lot of cabbage.

According to "Convert" 62 MPH = 99.77933 KPH

Either that g or it's because major news sources (press agencies,
broadcasting networks) sell their articles worldwide. And since the US
dollar is a handy "reference" currency, most people can easily convert
the amount ...

Nearby, Ireland is getting ready to convert its signage from miles to km
as I type this, leaving the UK, the USA and a few widely scattered tiny
dot-on-the-map island nations remaining out of the 'decimal
measurements' world (the UK did recently convert weights and measures
for 'trade' to SI, though).

100 km/h.

A *LOT* of those seemingly 'over-precise' Olde Englische measurement
figures that you see in, for example, news reports are actually
converted from evenly rounded metric amounts. For example, those recent
private space flights actually had to reach an even 100 km in altitude
to be recognized, that figure was converted by the news agencies to
"62.14 miles" for USA consumption.

Even the learned-from-childhood 'normal' human body temp (98.6F) is
actually converted from an even 37C.
