Zimbabwe to Release New Set of Higher Denomination Bearer Checks
"Padraic Brown" wrote in Their economy would be better off if local merchants and businesses could issue their own (kind of like the various local currencies you find in Germany or the US) -- but Mugabe is such a nutter, it's probably illegal too and they'd wind up dead or worse for the effort. Actually the Cargill Cotton Group has issued bearer cheques as early as 2003. For the most part though, Mugabe destroyed a lot of economic activity, many large corporations left after the seizures of the white owned farms began. So that doesn't leave much except for the Reserve Bank to issue notes, to the tune of where they are believed to be paying Giesecke and Devrient in Munich ?500.000 a week for stock, then doing the final printing in Harare. |
