Need to find rebinder to change paperback to hardcover
Should be any number of binderies that could facilitate this. I know
that Comstock's Bindery out here in Auburn coul ddo it, but I'd suggest a search in the phone book for someone nearby. Cheers, John |

Not all paperbacks are perfect bound however. Some large format
and prestige paperbacks are bound in folded signatures or sections, and then glued. However the difficulty there, is that it would probably be impossible to dismantle the individual sections which had been glued together with modern PVA adhesives, without causing irreperable damage. As AFAIAA, there is no known solvent for PVA and similar adhesives. They simply break down over time of their own accord. So in that case again, the only solution would probably be the expensive one of having the spine of the book trimmed with a guillotine, and having the individual pages rejoined with strips, so as to allow folding and stitching. There is a solution of sorts. I have a book that contains bundles of leaves (ten or so leaves in each bundle) machine sewn along the spine edge around a quarter of an inch in from the edge. These bundles are then linked together with thread to constitute a new spine. It makes for an awkward book, since it naturally tends to fall open between bundles, and when opening in the middle of a bundle the pages stand up stiffly. Thinner and larger leaves would make this defect somewhat less objectionable. It is,however, an imprefect solution to a difficult problem. |
