Default Commercial Bank of Scotland - who is that bloke?

I have a couple of One Pound notes from the Commercial Bank of Scotland
which are not covered by my catalogue - I assume they come under the banner
of 'specialised issues' for some reason.

The notes date 2nd January 1947 and 2nd January 1957, the first is a rather
impressive purple the second a more toned down blue - Apart from their
colour both notes look the same.

Other than wishing to know the pick numbers for these, I wonder if someone
can shed some light on who the man is featured on the right hand side of
the notes?

Thanks in advance, oh and Happy New Year!
Darren
