"PM Erdogan criticizes EU treatment of Turkey as "unfair""...
gogu wrote: http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/english/5598452.asp?gid=74 PM Erdogan criticizes EU treatment of Turkey as "unfair" In a speech today before his ruling AKP parliamentary members, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reserved sharp criticism for the EU, noting that Turkey had been treated unfairly. Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul also weighed in with criticism for what he termed the EU's "lack of vision." Erdogan's criticism comes in the wake of a meeting yesterday of EU foreign ministers wherein the majority of the foreign ministers expressed support for a proposal by the EU Commission to shelve 8 different topics from Turkey's EU accession talks. The proposal by the EU Commission came after Ankara's refusal to budge on opening up air and sea ports in Turkey to the Southern Cypriots. Over the past week however, Ankara has come forward to say that it will in fact open up one air and one sea port to Southern Cyprus, providing isolationary measures against Northern Cyprus are lifted. Erdogan: We only signed the addition protocol because of promises for N. Cyprus In today's speech, PM Erdogan noted that Ankara's signing of the additional protocol calling for the opening up of air and sea ports to Southern Cypriot trade had come in the wake of promises made by the EU to lift embargoes on Northern Cyprus. These promises, he reminded AKP members, had been made following the acceptance by Northern Cypriots of the Annan referendum. The Southern Cypriots later rejected the same referendum. Erdogan noted today that Ankara's refusal to open up ports to Southern Cyprus came only after it was clear that promises made to free Northern Cyprus from isolationary measures were not going to be kept. Erdogan also noted that morning that while EU-Turkey relations had passed through an important test, Europe was still not fulfilling its full responsibilities on the Cyprus question. Gul: EU lacks vision on Turkey Foreign Minister today criticized what he termed the EU's "lack of vision" on Turkey, noting that despite that lack of vision, the "talks will continue." -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane!
