Default $500 bill

I work at a casino and recently came accross a 1934 $500 bill in very
good condition. I was just curious if anyone knows how much it is
worth today?

condition. I was just curious if anyone knows how much it is worth today?

First off, let me say that you can be confident that it will never be "less"
than face value. That being said, I now state that it's "collector value"
varies due details in addition to the Series Date.

Can I assume that somewhere on the face it says "Gold Certificate" and that the
seal is a kinda deep yellow?

I begin to place your Note at a value of (bottom) $560 ($500 for face and at
least $60 in collector value). But there are other things that might make a
difference. For example:

- what is the Serial Number, including the letters?
- the signature on the left should say "Julian" ... but on the right, does the
signature say: Morgenthau, Vinson, or Snyder?
- near where it says "Series 1934" is there an additional letter (A, B, or
C)?

know that condition is important. You will need to look at the following: How
"dingy" (aged) does it look? How many folds are in it? How clear / worn is
the President's image? are there any rips or tears more than 2 millimeters in
length? Any other damage (holes from staples, etc)? Any writing on it? Does it
have an odor (perfume, mold, "leathery", etc)?

Consider all of the above carefully. Idf you want an accurate estimate, you
must have an honest evaluation.

All that being said, let me now say:
The good news: Your Note is probably worth at least a little more than the
above quote, to a serious collector.
The bad news: finding a collector who seeks $500 Notes might be a bit
difficult. Still, there's always this post-board, as well as eBay.

Too, there's a few online Note Dealers, such as First Currency and Banknotes
dotcom.

Interesting find.

Since noe of the people inquiring know how to "grade" currency, I
would suggest looking on Ebay at the many other $500 notes being sold
every week. Some may have grades (others not). But you can eyeball the
notes and get an idea of the relative grade of your note. Also, unless
you are fairly expert at grading paper money, light folds, bends, etc
are difficult to detect (but that doesn't mean they aren't there and
easily detected by a knowledgeable dealer/collector).

The values given by eric are rather of the consevarive side
(unrealistically low) and since he suggests values for 1934B and C
series notes (which certainly DO NOT EXIST), do NOT rely on them. $500
and $1000 are pretty popular witrh collecors right now. So again,
check Ebay and see what these are actually bringing. Alternatively,
sell them only to an honest and knowledgable PAPER MONEY dealer. Do
NOT ever sell paper money like this to a coin dealer. They USUALLY
don't know much about paper money and even if they do, they are likely
to resell it to a paper money dealer at a good profit (money you
lost).

American Eagle (they also sell on Ebay) and several others specialize
in large denomination notes and will likely give you a fair price for
your note(s).
