Default $500 and $1000 USA notes besides ebay?

Does any know know a good source for $500 and $1000 notes.
I am located in Australia now but I know for a fact I have seen some
$500 in circulation around the 1980's in the USA.

Now I actually want some to keep, but they go for ridiculous mark-ups
on ebay. Even if not at face value..perhaps around $600 rather than
$750 would be a better purchase price. Got my folks to go to 2-3 local
banks positive some would be there but alas none.

I have never seen a $1000 note in circulation but just curious to know
if there is an alternate source.

There are obviously some serious collectors here who would be in the
know, any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ajay

I have been looking for some for the last few years too. Have not been
able to get any in the banks either. Seems the only option is pay the
excessive premium, which I cannot currently.

$500 and higher notes no longer circulate in the US. IIRC the Treasury
(FRB??) for some years has required banks to return them if they are
deposited.

Denominations of US currency larger than $100 no longer circulate, although
there may be a few still floating around out there, outside of collector's
hands. Small-size US currency was first issued in 1929, in denominations of
$1 to $10,000.

Bills of $500 and up were discontinued by the Federal Reserve System on June
26, 1946; starting on July 14, 1969, they were retired from circulation.
Some may still be held in banks. This is why such notes carry a premium on
sites such as Ebay. Good luck. I always tell my friends if they happen to
find any $500 or $1000 bills, I'd be happy to take them off their hands. g
