Certainly didn't take people long to give it a try.

Details on CNN Money website.

Ahhh,
Hometown pride!
I grew up in Brockton (Recent source of counterfeit new $20 bill cited
in CNN web site) and worked at the restaurant they were found in
recently. Before the article was published, folks I know there told
me some shady lady tried to pay her bill with one and rushed out the
door as a nervous wreck. The people at the restaurant thought that it
wasn't a real good job in the forgery, (that's why they noticed)
despite what the article states.

I remember that French notes were (and maybe still are) printed in many
colors that blend into each other. What is their experience with
counterfeiters?

I don't know what their experience was, but I was passed
a counterfeit 50 franc note when I visited Marseilles, 10 years ago.
I didn't keep it long enough to compare it to a genuine bill....

Regular design changes are essential to keep ahead of the counterfeiters
and make their job more difficult.

Three Scottish banks issue notes with fairly regular design changes and
I've yet to hear of that confusing anyone. Billy

If the BEP keeps up this frequent-new-design pace, people will become
even more confused about what a real note is supposed to look like.
That will only make it easier for the counterfeiters.

The US desperately needs to consider polymer notes.

They are incredibly more difficult to counterfeit.

But then you don't need any cotton to make a polymer note.

The supplier of paper to print US currency has strong connections with
certain people in Congress. That connection would have to be overcome
before polymer notes would be considered. I wouldn't expect anything to
be done for many years.
