Default India~know your strikes.

(guessing)

CANTT

Abbreviaton of Cantonment (pronounced I think canTONEment)

A cantonment is a temporary or semi-permanent military quarters.
The word cantonment is derived from the French word Canton meaning corner or district.
(eg Canton of Geneva)

In Southern Asia, the term cantonment also describes PERMANENT
military stations.

(The ADEN Cantonment Post Office was later called ADEN CAMP.)

Cantonments can be found in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, South Africa,
Ghana
and Sri Lanka. In United States military parlance, a cantonment is an
essentially
permanent residential (i.e. barracks) section of a fort or other such
military
installation. See, for example Fort Hood.

India currently has 62 cantonments in 17 different states, not
including smaller
'sub-cantonments' in the same regional area.

Your cancel is probably from one of:
Dehradun Cantonment (Clement Town)
Dehradun, New Cantonment ("New Cantt.")
Wellington Cantonment

Broadcasting my ignorance Blair,
are you able to explain the common mark "via Brindisi" please.
Apart from its obvious location, why was it, mail was often routed through there?
Any gossip?

"Blair" Sorry.

The Suez Canal opened in 1869. Making the mail run from the
UK to India much faster.

From 1871 to 1914, it was faster for the India mails / passengers
to go via Brindisi, than the route via Southampton.

However the cost was higher for mail taking this route. (Italy
charged a fee) so it had a higher postage rate than the slower
Southampton route.

In 1914, the route was changed to via Marseille, due to the risk
of war.

Sydney Morning Herald - Jan 4, 1893
http://news.google.com/newspapers?ni...g=4458,2111312

A Supplementary Mail Contract was signed with P & O for period
31 January 1905 to 31 January 1908 for the Brindisi-Bombay Mail
Steamer to cover the journey within 278 hours, which only allowed
a 3 hour stop at Aden. [The three hour maximum stopover of 1888
had obviously extended in the meantime.], except during the
southwest
monsoon when the transit time from Bombay to Brindisi would be
extended by 36 hours. By 1905-06 the total number of bags handled
had risen to nearly 29,500.
