Default About gum [was ID questions]

Briefmarken.

This is the first time I was reading something on this "gomme
économisée".
I will ask on the French speaking philately news-group if somebody is
aware of it.

Here is the answer I got on
news:fr.rec.philatelie

The back of the stamps has a pattern of circles ; only the intervals
between the circles wear the gum :

Apart from the already mentioned stamps from Thüringe (Yvert 1 to 8,
17 to 20 + BF 4), this is also found on n° 10 and 12 from Eastern
Saxony, n° 37 to 39 from Western Saxony, as well as on all or part of
the local issues from the cities of Finsterwalde, Görlitz and Plauen.

.... a special form of stamp gumming.

It was doen in times of economic setback. The idea was to save raw materials
used for the gum.
The principle was easy: do not cover the entire surface. Parts of the stamp
were left un-gummed.

These issues are very wanted with stamp collectors, and one of the few
pieces of which the back is worth showing.
Two famous examples are found in Austra and Germany shortly after WW II.
