Default penny error? (usa)

I stumbled across this unusual penny. The rim of the edges are silver
and there are spots here and there on the face where there is
silvering. Is this an error of any kind? It seems very clean and even
to have been simply scratched away. I did some research online but
nothing encountered seemed to fit this particular penny.

I took some scans:

I'd appreciate any insight the group could provide.

It is a zinc Cent, and the silver color is where the copper has been
removed somehow, perhaps intentionally.

It looks to me as if someone put a file to the coin and abraded off the
copper coating on the rims and high points of the design, exposing the zinc
core.
