Counterfeit money factory uncovered

Friday, May 29 2009
by Nicola Forman

A counterfeit cash-production factory and thousands
of fake £1 coins have been uncovered at a farm in a
quiet country village. Police discovered the coins
during a raid on a building at Tonge Corner Farm in
Tonge, just outside Bapchild. Police also found a
machine which they believe was used to make the
fake money.

Neighbours said they did not have a clue what was
going on.

The said they had heard what they thought was the
noise of an extractor fan but nothing else. One,
who asked not to be named, said not long after
police cars were seen at the farm that rumours
started. He said: "I used to see people come and
go from the farm but never thought anything of it.
"I saw the police raid the building, just loads of
police cars and then the rumours started." The farm
is owned by Tim Holt and his father Derek, but the
building was rented out. Mr Holt said he did not
have a clue anything out of the ordinary was going
on.

He said the farm had been in the family for almost
40 years and the barn had been rented by the same
person for the last five or six years. Police
confirmed that "thousands of pounds of counterfeit
coins and a press machine were found" during the
raid on Wednesday, May

Four men were arrested and three charged with
possessing, producing and manufacturing counterfeit
coins.

They are 69-year-old Michael Silk of Sanderling Way,
Iwade, 48-year-old Stephen Silk of Orchard Cottages,
Borden, and 64-year-old Paul Bart, of Stanborough
Avenue, Boreham Wood, Hertfordshire.

They have been remanded in custody to appear at
Sittingbourne Magistrates on Friday, June 12.

A 61-year-old Sheerness man has been bailed until
July 2, pending further inquiries.

I'd say the owner of that barn is possessed of an appalling lack of
curiosity.

Good point - I lived for a good number of years in a fairly scattered
farming community (here in the UK), and despite the sparse population,
nothing happened that somebody didn't notice, and then pass into the
gossip grapevine.
(I wonder how the rent was paid? In Pound coins?)

I'm no expert, for sure, but it seems that the profit margin on making
credible coins would be slim. Seems hardly worth the effort.
I know that, generally, in the USA the most often "money" counterfeited is
the $20 bill. Enough value to make it worthwhile and common enough not to
get checked too closely.

The Walmart here in North Lugburz checks every twenty I give them. Maybe I
just look like a crook, I dunno.

My people are suppose to check every twenty that is tenderd, as well as
higher denominations. Last week we were stuck with a counterfeit twenty
because a recently hired employee did not give the bill any scrutiny (not
much scrutiny would have been necessary, color not quite right, no watermark
or embedded threads). When I turned the counterfeit bill in to the police
chief he saif that the counterfeit 20s were not uncommon at the nearby
casino. That info was passed back to my cashiers, putting them on high
alert.

They do not need to make credible coins. People do not look closely at small change.

Almost all bills get checked in shops nowadays. Some of the fake pound coins
pass a cursory glance, and some are better than that.

£1 coins are 'small' change? The last I checked, £1 was about USA$1.50.

I'll say it again, the Royal Mint has little choice but to change the metal in
the £1 to make them harder to fake! If I was a shopkeeper in the UK, I would
be near the point of no longer accepting them.
