Default Identifying modern restrike cartwheel pennies

Some little while ago I was ranting about a Cartwheel Penny (or 2d) being
passed off on the 'bay as "UNC authentic".

I was dismayed, at the time, at not being able to find any current auctions
for correctly attributed restrikes of this famous coin.

But fear not! There are now quite a few available on eBay UK, this one
featuring perhaps the best photos:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...category=53 8

Its a good restrike, as far as these things go, but it is instantly
recognisable as not being authentic, for all the points I posted earlier.

It was a noble venture, I guess, to glorify this significant coin, but I
sure wish they'd incorporated an incuse "COPY" legend.

Cool. They're pretty nice all the same.

Yeah. They're not bad.
....and the price is certainly right (last time I looked)

Bob, do you have a *real* one to compare it to (when you get it) ?

I'd be interested in a side-by-side comparison.

There would be fewer problems with restrikes, replicas and fantasy
pieces if the obv/rev were put 180 degrees from the original alignment.

I really liked that idea the first time I heard you suggest it, Alan, but I
fear the manufacturers may have some ulterior motive, which explains their
not doing so.

It sure would be neater than the *COPY* stamp.

I can't claim it as an original thought, I picked it up from Bruce
Hickmott, I think.
It would certainly help, and I endorse it whole-heartedly. I cannot
imagine the possible ulterior motive, though, as no increase in resale
values (through being mistaken as 'the Real McCoy') can benefit the
issuer directly.

Jeff,

The originals are copper.

These repro's aren't copper and really wouldn't fool anyone in a month
of sundays. At least, they wouldn't fool anyone who knew what copper
looked like, and that a cartwheel 2d was supposed to be made of copper.

!!
What are they struck in, Ian? I naturally assumed a copy would be in
copper.
