Needed: Ink Recommendations for Sheaffer Nonsense Fountain Pen!
"MatthewK" wrote in message ... Anything "bad" that has happened to me in any thread I post here is because of lack of clarity on my part. I prefer to think that we've been trying to guide you. "JP" wrote in message news:6GQ4k.4276$Mu.3856@trndny07... "Bluesea" wrote in message ... snipped Isn't the thought of shelling out $300 for a single pen alarming? It chokes me. Yet, I have to be realistic - there are people who don't think twice about dropping that kind of dough on a good user pen. Wait 'til you're out of school and can afford a pen that costs over $40 . I've been thinking that I should raise the high end to $400 because of inflation. $300 for a writing utensil is alarming. A friend, employed as an ad copywriter, has a Pel M800 as his daily writer. He uses it at his desk and for meetings. It's his favorite pen and the only fp he has. $300 for a fetish object is OK. Why is $300 for a fetish object OK but alarming for a writing utensil? After all, it's still $300 being spent on a single item. snip And I don't consider myself a collector. I'd call it a fetish. LOL. Okay, now I get it. You're rationalizing the expenditure by saying that $300 for a fetish is okay. I say that as long as mortgage/rent, groceries, utilities, and other bills for basic living needs are paid, it doesn't matter on what we spend our disposable income as long as it isn't for something illegal. My problem is that I can't justify it for myself because less expensive pens have done extremely well for me even for eye appeal. -- ~~Bluesea~~ Spam is great in musubi, but not in email. Even though I like Sailor 1911 and a few lower end Stipulas, I've got enough modern pens (that I don't use) that my paring usually starts at the bottom. There was a point I was "gathering" and not collecting, and I had a bunch of pens between $80 and $250. Now I think I've better defined what I like. I sometimes buy stuff just to fix it and resell it, then stupidly get attached to something I fix well. I've got a bunch of 2nd and 3rd tier golden-age pens with sweet flexible Warranted nibs...and... I...just...can't....bring....myself.... to sell them, particularly because they probably aren't worth $80 |

However, there are more than plenty on the road that cost at least that much. Its all about your priorities and income level. $300 for a writing utensil may be alarming to you, based on how you allocate your resources. It isn't alarming in the absolute though. |

If you use your pens, watch out for the clip on the Verve. I have a fountain and rollerball in the platinum finish, and both clips broke, necessitating a repair. Fortunately, Cross was very prompt with both pens; their warranty really means something. Jeff |

Can a collection consist of a single pen? Since I collect user pens, and this is alt.COLLECTING.pens-pencils, that $300 went for 10 pens @$30 each or 3 pens @$100 each or 2 pens @$150 each. I've been thinking that I should raise the high end to $400 because of inflation. I'm thinking of lowering, not raising, the amount I'll pay for a pen. That's fine with me. I've been thinking that I should raise the high end to $400 because of inflation. I went to Bittner's Visconti Sale this last weekend and bought three pens (and some other stuff) and managed to keep my bill at around $900. What I bought pen-wise: 1) Visconti Mazzi The Queen/Climbing the Sky frankenpen (I have the top half of one LE and the bottom half of the other) Upgrade to an 18k nib so I could have a factory stub. 2) Visconti Millenium Arc in Orange. I have the blue one, so now I have two of the three. 3) Visconti Van Gogh Midi in the new Evergreen. $146 (instead of $195) The first was definitely a splurge and will use, but it's a desk pen, not a carry pen. The second is just gorgeous and I'm sure I'll use it a lot. The third I'll use all the time. http://www.flickr.com/photos/muhe-e/2578440809/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/muhe-e/2579276384/ So I guess I don't find it alarming, though I do tend to find my daily writers are the ones I paid $100-$200 for (regardless of original street price). -- _Deirdre web: http://deirdre.net blog: http://dsmoen.livejournal.com/ "Memes are a hoax!
