A Texan looks at Lincoln on the 200th anniversary of his birth

The 200th birthday of Lincoln celebrations

2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham
Lincoln and Charles Darwin. Both men were responsible for
shaping the way that people looked at themselves. Both
men made radical changes in their perspective fields.
The bicentennial of Lincoln's birth is the focal point
of many political pundits. With the approaching
bicentennial of his birth, people will examine who he
was and what he did.

Throughout the State of Illinois and Washington D. C.,
plans are being made to commemorate the birth of this
politician who is an icon in American and International
politics. Several national polls
(Gallup-2007, ABC -2000) ranked him the most influential
and best president. In the polls where he is not first,
he is often considered in the top three of Presidents
considered the "best".

Scheduled Celebration Events

In Washington, D.C., the following events are scheduled
as part of the celebrations:

· February 12, 2009, Lincoln's Birthday Tribute and
Wreath Laying

· February 12, 2009 - Reopening of Ford's Theatre

· April 12, 2009 (Easter Sunday) Re-enactment of Marian
Anderson's Easter Concert

· April 16, 2009 Emancipation Day Parade

April 16-19, 2009 American Association of Lincoln Presenters

· May 30, 2009 Re-Dedication of the Lincoln Memorial

There will also be two versions of a commemorative penny.
The commemorative coin will emphasize the childhood of
this political figure. Besides coins, there are
commemorative plates and other items marking the
bicentennial of Lincoln. The commemorative penny will
feature scenes associated with Lincoln's past on the
obverse side of the coin. This is not the first
Lincoln commemorative coin. On the centennial of his
birth, a half-dollar coin was minted to mark the
occasion.

The famous Lincoln Logs are also planning a
commemorative edition of their product to mark the
bicentennial of this President.

Celebrations are also planned at the University of
Illinois and Loyola University and other locations
throughout the States of Illinois, Kentucky and
Indiana.

He "proved" no such thing. What you or I choose to believe is up to us.
Darwin merely proposed a theory to dispute the creationist theory widely
accepted by most religions. As far me (still unable to grasp infinity) I
think that everything there is had to come from somewhere, somehow....

Just my two cents. John

Here's one explanation of infinity.

Once every 10,000 years a magical bird flies over a mountain and drops a
feather, when the feathers have worn the mountain flat, that's infinity.

From the standard scientific point of view, Darwin formulated a hypothesis
based upon what he observed and then proceeded to test it in a variety of
ways. Once he found evidence to support that hypothesis, that hypothesis
became a theory. It remains a theory today, supported by overwhelming
evidence, to the point where, in the words of the late, great Stephen Jay
Gould, "it would be perverse to wothhold provisional assent." But no theory
ever achieves 100% confirmation, as there is always more research that can
be done.

His findings, by the way, neither prove nor disprove the existence of God.
Being evidence-based, science can only deal with the natural world and by
definition cannot deal with the supernatural world. So, your observation
that "everything there is had to come from somewhere, somehow..." can remain
intact and valid. I am convinced that, while science can and does explore
the realm of Time = Zero plus, and make that "plus" ever smaller and
smaller, it will never be able to examine T = Zero to learn the Who, How,
and Why.

I have plenty of schooling on Darwin. More than you, obviously, and
more than enough to know that he didn't "disprove the existence of
God". So justify your statement. Otherwise, the real translation is
"Mark B. is an ignorant troll."

Which, in view of your goofy economic analyses here, seems more and
more to be the case.

James, I agree with what you said, which as usual is much more eloquent than
I could express.

Happy New Year to you and all the rcc'ers. (trolls excluded) may 2009 and
beyond be numismatically friendly and prosperous for all of us.
