I'm also crossing my fingers for the best ever turnout at the Spring '05
PHILLY show -- Philly is always a good show, even if sales and attendance are low - why? the real collectors turn out, not just the commodity traders (unlike many sports card shows) and there is always something odd to buy. Plus where else do you get to see Paul Hart wandering around buying all types of wierd S+++ to resell in the UK Dave Grimes Check out my WEB Page at http://members.aol.com/noblegb/page/text.html |

We were set up at the Secaucus NJ Show at the Crowne Plaza.
We had a great time...lots of fun, lots of comraderie...lots of wheeling and dealing. Lots to see at manufacturers tables and dealers tables alike. Very well run... Of course I agree the attendance was low, and all of us would have preferred otherwise. But some collectors and dealers did drive or fly very long distances to show up there. Even in the horrible weather on Friday (rain or snow depending on where you were driving from). It is a new show, this is it's 2nd year..and needs time to establish itself in the world of the nonsport collector as a 'have to be there' kinda place. It deserves to be seen that way..and the promotion team is working very hard, and succeeding, in running a very collector and dealer friendly two-day show. And I do think it's a bit unfair to compare it to the Philly NonSport Show, attendance-wise, at this point..as that show has been running for over 20 years! Collectors who attended had a great time. If you don't believe me, head over to the Nonsport Update Talk Board Forum and read the posts there from folks who did. Or, take a look for yourself at the 6 pages of pictures that have been posted if you want to know some of the goings on, and the product that was availabe: http://nonsportupdate.infopop.cc/eve...851034 47&p=1 Byrna B&B Grrrl AF & Cards |

It odd for me to say this, but I agree with Byrna. Lots of trading and
wheeling and dealing. You really had to earn your money at this show. I had a good time came home with more money than I started with and a lot more product thanks to Mike and Tommy. This is a buyers market right now and if you can buy for the right price you can make some money and keep your customers happy. I acutally sold a Stargate movie set at the show. The guy told me I was the only one that had it and was happy to pay $5 for it. E-bay is still the big problem in the industry. Dealers have to stop starting auctions below $10 for a card that is 1 per case. It makes the card look more common than it is. I keep hearing from people that they can't find stuff they want at shows. One customer came up to me and was looking for a charmed card. I had it for $10 and showed her that it went for more in NSU. I even sent her over to another dealer that had it for $25 to show her that it was a good deal. You would think she would buy it. She never forked out the money. Some days I feel like ripping the cards in half and offering them a 50% discount. Dave |

Byrna, Dave and a few others, thanks for you all your support. I too
was very disappointed in the attendance for the show. We used even more media outlets (newspapers, magazines, cable TV collecting show, Village Voice Banners, direct mail and email, more flyers everywhere...) to try and pull in the buying customers. We do endeavor to make the show not only fun and comfortable for the dealers but also profitable. Over the coming cold months my team and I will be back at the drawing board to figure out how to beat this show attendance slump and prove to the customers it can be an enjoyable experience to buy in person, talk to dealers, intermingle with other collectors etc...... Yah know, I haven't attended a show as a collector since 1996 and as a
dealer since 1997, so I ahve no right to voice thoughts on this topic, but having said THAT, I'll talk anyway. I admire those folks who do all of what you mentined below and more, it's an amazingly tough way to stay involved in the hobby. My hats off to you and the promoters. It's been obvious for many years that there are advantages to the Internet. MAny of the new generation of card collectors haven't ever done anything BUT use the Internet and Ebay and it seems like only the *old crowd* clings to the shows. Good or bad? Good, I think. There is something to be said for getting off own's duff and getting out to shows. So, what do people think might work to get people into shows? Keeping costs in mind, of course. Lynne Lynne, Being convenient? There is nothing in LV. At least nothing that would carry cards I am interested in. I might be too hardcore to find any cards I want at any show, unless it is a new set that just came out. The only show I go to is San Diego Comic Con. It isn't close (6 hour drive from here), but at least there is plenty to do, tons of cards, comics, freebies, previews of movies coming out in the next year, major stars and signers. of course it took them what? 30 years to get to this point. They are huge, 50,000 people a day. nearly 300,000 sq ft. If there was a nice small show in LV, I would support it even if they have nothing I want. David |

If there were some small shows in my area of Southern California I would definately support them. For I have nothing out here but Comicon once a year. Barry |
