Default Royal Mail to increase stamp prices

Royal Mail to increase stamp prices
January 2007

First class up 2p, second class up 1p

Royal Mail will be increasing first and second class stamp prices from
April 2007.

First class stamps for small letters will increase from 32p to 34p,
whilst second class stamps for small letters will rise to 24p from 23p.
Large letters sent first class will cost 48p, an increase of 4p, whilst
large letters sent second class will cost 40p, a jump of 3p.

Royal Mail have defended the decision to increase prices, claiming that
they are being brought more in line with the actual cost of providing
the service.

"Stamped mail made a loss of £237m in the 2005-06 financial year,
equivalent to 6p on every first and second class stamped letter," said
Lorna Clarkson, Royal Mail's director of commercial policy and pricing.

The date of the increase is 2 April. The changes will probably mean
the demise of the 9p and 12p make-up stamps and a new one for 16p.
While these basic price changes are modest, there will be an average
of 6% increase on higher rates, well above inflation.

No doubt we will get the usual winges from the politicians and other
ill-informed parties.

However it is a fact that in part these price increases are directly
attributable to government action in as much as the Royal mail's
monopoly has been destroyed - allowing the competition to "cherry-pick"
the profitable business which has always "cross-subsidised" the
unprofitable. Thus the only people who will have to pay the new rates
are those who cannot access the competition's services, where the
competition deems the business to be not worth chasing. IMHO if you
introduce competition the competitor should be FORCED to offer the same
level of service as the prior monopoly - that way we can see who really
is the more efficient.

The days of universally accessible one-price postage ( as per the penny
post of 1840 ) is dead - Rowland Hill must be turning ( nay spinning! )
in his grave.

In the race for business economy, and the great god profitability, the
people at large have omitted to realise ( as a result of "spin") just
what a fundamental change this is - yet another way of punishing the
disadvantaged in our so-called egalitarian society - people would
sooner "posture" about (sometimes imagined )racism, sexism. ageism etc
- and yet ignore fundamental inequality such as this - presumably
because you can't "sex-up" a boring subject like postal rates!!

End of rant

Regards from UK
Malcolm

Prices of currently valid stamps do not increase, it is the postage rate
that does.

Huh? It is true that any stocks of Non Value Indicator stamps that you
may hold will rise in value from the date of the increase but if you
run out of them or don't have any you will have to pay more for them
from 2 April than you do today. So the prices of some currently valid
stamps WILL increase

All this has a familiar ring to it.
USPS is lurking, looking for more insane ideas.

IMN(ot)S(o)HO nobody should be forced to do something as long as it uses
peaceful means.

Just to note that my site below is mainly about using force (for a better
future for all, of course) and about the results.

Sorry- perhaps I could have picked better wording, I forget that
non-native English speakers sometimes translate literally - I didn't
mean physical force. How does "legally obliged" sound? The gist of the
argument is that competition between two operators providing different
levels of service is unfair, and the people who through circumstances
are" forced "( by circumstances rather than by men in jackboots !) to
use the universal system rather than the selective system
inevitablyhave to pay more. Perhaps Governemnt ought to allow the Royal
Mail to scale down its service to the same level as the competition
thus leaving the private consumer with no mail service at all!
