US postage rate to increase

This is interesting. I've sent and recieved over 2000 items through eBay,
mostly with the USPS and have never had to make a claim. Not doubting your
statement, but do you have any evidence to substantiate your argument?

USPS can also hope that eBay will save it too...

Not considering the number of lost shipments being reported ... UPS
ans DHL are rapidly gaining ground with many (larger) eBayers.

Three personal sales, all sent with 'delivery confirmation' (45 cent
fee!). Haven't had any -incoming- lost, though some have taken a
MONTH to get through. One item (from UK) arrived in San Francisco the
day after mailing at Leeds. It then took an additional 22 Days to get
to Nevada and be restamped at the local PO!

USPS = Unreliable Service, Poor Support.

Similar things are about to happen in the UK too.

It is rumoured that first-class post for a basic 60 gram letter
within the UK will rise from 30 pence to 39 pence next year.
How's that for inflation!

It is all to do with the de-regulation of the postal service, to
allow new companies to compete with 'the post office'.

As I understand it, the rise is to facilitate the PO to compete with new
companies...

As for inflation, it is generally lower than the postage increase, as an UK
stamp collector demonstrated it here, this some years ago.

Recently the Swiss PO increased the prices, from CHF 0.7 to 0.85 for the
second class, and from 0.90 to 1.00 for the first class. Now the PO suddenly
makes big profits... How easy, isn't it?

And, as a collector wrote in SBZ (citing from memory), earlier we had only
one class, we paid much less and the whole post was delivered next day, now
we have to wait much longer, for any of it.

few days, some postings that are one, two or more days old appear on this
newsgroups and others. I check each newsgroup twice a day. After reading
any newsgroup, I delete ALL messages and I see them go away. The next day,
some reappear. I have an HP computer, and receive the newsgroups in Outlook
Express from rec.collecting.stamps.discuss, as provided by my server. Has
anyone had a similar experience?

The USPS says that the rate increase is to pay for a required US$3.1
Billion escrow payment to cover future pension costs for USPS employees
that are due to their past service in the military. They have been
trying to get these costs to be covered by allocated general funds,
like other US government agencies, but that issue is tied to a postal
reform bill that seems stalled in Congress.

An interesting side-note to this is that mail between the US, the
Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia will no longer
be charged at US domestic rates. See at the above URL for details.
Apparently mail between the US and Palau will continue to use US
domestic rates for now.

Yes. Some newsserver somewhere has the hiccups. I've seen posts as old
as October 19 re-emerge. Seems to have subsided, however.
