2003?

SHORT Answer:
The intended date of release was to be in 2004, so they went ahead and printed
them up thusly.

Has this ever happened before? Have we previously had "currency from
the future"?

I just placed my order for my 2004 proof set, and they are *guaranteeing*
delivery before Christmas.

(But I am referring to Australia)

Yup. In 1975, the 1976 "Bicentennial" Quarter and Half Dollar.

....and...

Yesterday (I think) I mentioned that the Royal Aussie Mint was promising
delivery of the 2004 proof sets before Christmas.

They've made good their promise - my set arrived today. For anyone
interested, I have put some scans at: http://mendosus.com/2004proof.html

Whoo-hoo!
For a month and a half I've got next year's coins!

(easily amused)

"A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he
felt. He said, I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One
wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving,
compassionate one. The grandson asked him, Which wolf will win the
fight in your heart? The grandfather answered, The one I feed."

I haven't got my books at work, so how long is it since we have had just
plain coins in the proof sets with no commemoratives?

Must be over a decade

1991, I believe, was the last "plain vanilla" set. Included my favourite
little bronzes, too.

However - the Unc set for this year is plain - no hologram, so silly
designs. (Always look on the bright side.)
