Canada has been issuing copper coated steel cents for several years. Interestingly enough they continue to issue copper coated zinc cents also. Frankly all this moaning about how costly it is to mint cents is just a lot of hog wash. Whatever savings the mint "MAY" get is just a drop in the bucket compared to the total Fed budget. If the gubmint REALLY wants to save money, it can stop ****ing away a couple of billion bucks a week funding the crisis in the Middle East. |

Steel cents on the way...?
From my experience abroad, its easy to have cheap coins in different
colors. Brazil has steal coins coated in copper for the 1 and 5 cent coins for the same color as the penny. 10 and 25 cents are coated in brass for a color similar to the sacs and pressies. As the penny is not accepted in any vending machine, change in composition is not an issue. I have no idea how much nickel can be removed from the 5 cent coin and replaced with steal before vending machines stop recognizing it. As for the "common cents" people, why dont they bitch at a lack of a mil? Are we not losing billions in gasoline station transactions? Also, their "rounding tax" doesnt seem to take into account that rounding is also done downwards |

The only problem is it is reported to cost the RCM 0.8 cents to make a penny so you are already starting out with very little wiggle room in terms of cost savings. |

For some reason Canada has also made the coper plated zinc cents during that time period also. Don't know if there was a shortage of steel blanks or what. |

Since 1992 the UK one penny and two pence coins have been copper plated steel. They are easy to spot in the fountains in shopping centres as they rust a lot faster than the older bronze coins. Since 1992, I don't recall the exchange being much better than 1.5 dollars to a pound, and usually worse. That makes the economies of the matter a lot different. The Canadian experience is more equivalent to ours. It seems to me that whatever is done, the Mint will still have tight margins to work with. It might be better to get people used to a silvery color, now, as the inevtiable prelude to aluminum or aluminum- alloy cents. oly |
