Price check and any issues please on a Rowe Berkeley 100 CD wallmount jukebox
Hi all:
Thanks in advance for your advice. I am looking at a Rowe Berkeley 100 CD wall mount jukebox that is sitting in a guys basement and has not been used in years. He said it worked about 3-4 years ago. Of course I will make sure this works by trying it out. Just a couple of questions for the group please. Is $1500 a good price for this? It has 100 CD's in it. Can this stand up by itself? I want to sit it on a bar. He has it laying on the floor and I do not wish to mount it on a wall. Are there any problems this unit is known for and is parts available for things that go wrong. Thank you so much for your help. Charlie |

Remember that wall mount jukes are made in a smaller production run so there's less of them out there to buy. * Can this stand up by itself? * NO! It must be attached to a wall. That's why they call it a wall mount jukebox. Otherwise you can't access the power switch, volume control, or reject button. Plus you'd screw up the front door by overstressing it and warping it. Are there any problems this unit is known for and is parts available for things that go wrong. This model is still in production so all parts are available: http://www.roweinternational.com/jukebox_berkeley.html Charlie |

Are there any problems this unit is known for and is parts available for things that go wrong. Thank you so much for your help. Charlie $1500 sounds about the go to me. Im not in the US, so don't know about that market, it might be different. ITs designed to be wall mounted, and as it is you couldn't really mount it on a bar as it is - but it could probably be done if you really need to. If you did mount it on a bar as it is, you wouldnt be able to get the front door open, it would scrape on the bar top. It also might not be stable, and might topple over if bumped or pushed. - especially on location. If this machine fell to the floor from a bar or table, you could just about kiss it goodbye, the damage would be that bad. To mount it on a bar, you would have to raise it (probably by wood blocks, or a home made plinth) by say 3-4 inches (enough so you can get to the power switch, vol control and cancel button that are at the front centre underside of the cabinet.) You would then bolt it down through the floor of the juke cabinet, through the plinth and into the bar (as long as the bar top is solid). The back isn't very attractive when the machine is upright, so if you cover it, make sure there is adequate ventiliation at the bottom, when making any support plinth. You could also make up a back support (like a small false wall) behind it to hang it from, and mount the "wall" to the bar that way. 18mm ply would be the go, or a steel frame maybe ?. Again would have to be VERY firmly mounted to the bar, to take the weight. I bear no responsibilty for any damage or injury if these methods don't work, or don't comply with local laws (if any?) Note also that the 4 plastic "corners" (gold on this model) on the front door are very fragile. When lifting or moving the machine, DO NOT use the corners to hold onto. Also make sure they dont "hit" on anything when sliding the machine into your vehicle. Tie it down so it cant move around and hit on anything during the trip. If standing machine upright while storing it or moving it, do not allow the corners to sit directly on the floor and bear weight. At work we made a special trolley to stand these machines on so the corners hang over the front and there is no weight on them. There are no special problems with this machine that (compared to upright ROWE models), other than the plastic "posts" (they are moulded into the lower front plastic panel of these machines), that the glass window and dome (the part you view the CD rack through) supports screw into. These are very thin, and THESE ARE VERY EASY to BREAK, so don't unscrew them unnececessarily and dont overtighten them. Have had these break off on location, and its very difficult to repair. The berkley has a very attractive woodgrain front, so you don't want bolt heads sticking through ruining the appearance from attempting to repair this problem. Parts are available. Mechanism, computer boards, amplifier (note - pre amp board is the same but has "right angle" rather than straight through connectors between pre-amp and power amp) parts are the same as any other Laserstar of that era. Power supply board is different, but is made fully of "off the shelf" parts. Having owned several of these in the last 10 years or so, cant say I have had any electronic problems with them. They still make these machines, and Rowe supposedly had a policy of supplying parts for 10 years after production of a model ceased. |
