Default Air Mail

AFIK Air Mail stamps are just about a thing of the past. USPS does
occasionally issue a Air Mail stamp, are there any others?
I think all mail within the US is transported by air on commercial air
liners.
Next question; does International Letter Mail travel via air?
Who knows air?

Default Air Mail

US domestic air mail still travels in a variety of ways, mostly slowly and
on a space available basis.

US International mail travels by air on a space available basis. US air
mail postage issues became redundant when only air transport was used. By
charging the same, by weight and destination, postal revenues were
increased.

Hi Ralph,

In what France is concerned, La Poste issues one of these stamps
(labeled Poste Aerienne) about each year.
They display a subject related to aviation and have a higher face value
than the current stamps.
You may see here the stamps issued in the last years :

No use for Air Mail : the only interest is their high face value.

Apart from the very cheap international rates (like printed matters),
all the international mail from France travels by air (apart may be mail
to neighbouring countries).
Domestic mail some years ago was traveling by air (above ~ 200 miles) or
by train or road for shorter distance.

The French post was owning or renting a dedicated fleet of airplanes :

This ended in jan 2000

Some stamps on this service which began in 1939 :

http://www.phil-ouest.com/Timbre.php...tale_nuit_1964
http://www.phil-ouest.com/Timbre.php...Luneville_1992

Now this has ended and all domestic mail travels by train or by road.

Quite quickly, as generally a priority letter (today the rate is .55
Euro ie .70 US $ up to 20 grammes) arrives anywhere whithin the country
the day after.

N.B. Are you aware, Ralph, of the 2008 joint issues in France ?

19 may France-Canada (600 th anniversary of French settlements in
Quebec) very beautiful stamps !

16 oct France-Vietnam (Bonifacio cape in Corsica and Along bay)
http://www.phil-ouest.com/Timbre.php...Bonifacio_2008
http://www.phil-ouest.com/Timbre.php...aie_Along_2008

10 nov France-Israel (1st flight on 12 june 1948)
http://www.phil-ouest.com/Timbre.php...ce_Israel_2008

12 nov France-Lebanon (Oaktree for France & Cedar tree for Lebanon)

Hyperinflation of stamp issues ;-)

Thank you Pierre for the information. I have all of the Joint Issues
you mentioned except the Lebanon stamp and it is on order.
