-I have a no-name cheapie FP that just doesn't seem to want to write
-properly (it's skips a lot and I seem to spend an awful lot of time
-squeezing the ink cartridge for better flow)... any advice from you
-experts out there?

I suggest removing the cartridge and washing accumulated gunk out
of the pen. Just hold the front-end of the pen under running, mildly
lukewarm water, so the dried ink runs out the rear end. Do this for
several minutes or until the water runs clear. This should help a
lot and eliminate the need to do any cartridge-squeezing.

The pen should now work perfectly, subject to the nature of
different inks as well as different types of paper. If it doesn't,
more advanced measures may be possible -- but as you indicated,
those should be left to the experts.

Over the course of decades, during which time I've used a certain
widely-distributed, inexpensive brand of cartridge pen for common
usage, I've found it a good idea to rinse out my pens on occasion,
especially when changing ink colors, and definitely when changing
brands of ink. This helps avoid that annoying cartridge-squeezing
syndrome.
