Was the George Best note released into circulation?

The IBNS is trying to determine of the George Best commemorative note is
eligible for Bank Note of the Year nominations.

Was the note released into circulation for genuine use by the public, or
only sold at a premium?

All one million notes were sold to collectors. I don't think there are
any in circulation.

If the bank sold them for face value, then I'd consider them a circulating
note, even if they're fetching more on the resale market. On the other hand,
if they sold them at a premium, like the Polish pope notes, then they're
obviously intended for collectors only and ineligible for nomination.

Anyone have first-hand knowledge of the price from the bank?

They were sold initially at the bank for 5 Pounds

Another interesting thought.... Uncirculated notes in general worth
more than circulated ones. However, if all the George Best notes were
bought by collectors, presumably in uncirculated condition, then a
circulated one would theorectically be worth more than uncirculated, no?

Thanks for the link in the other post that confirms that this note was
available for £5 and therefore is eligible for nomination for Bank Note of
the Year.

As to your other thought, I disagree. Condition being paramount to most
collectors, an uncirculated note is always going to be worth more than a
circulated note, unless there is some particularly compelling back story or
something that makes the circulated note unique. After all, if it were
otherwise, collectors could increase the value of an UNC note by putting it
in their wallet for a few weeks and roughing it up.

I know that you posted in jest but I have thought that one day a circulated
note may indeed be worth more than an uncirculated one.

There are so many notes around that have been treated to give the look of an
unc note that eventually lower grade notes, even dirty ones, may sell at a
premium as untouched ones are scarcer than processed notes. Billy

In some rare cases this is the case. Usually other circumstances have
to be present for that to occur (e.g. identifying circulated /
collector notes by serial number). For instance here in New Zealand
there was a 50 pound note issue in the 1950's/60's
Some of the earlier serial numbers are worth more circulated than some
later uncirculated notes because the later serial numbers were issued
at a later date to collectors while the earlier ones were genuinely
circulated - even though it was the same issue and printed from the
same plates. Better still is an uncirculated "circulated" note ;-) Of
course you have to documented the proof it is circulated. Pay for an
item with the note and take photographic proof of it. Then buy it back.
Then sell it complete with photographic proof on ebay. I bet is sells
for more !

Whether it is going to worth a lot of money or just the face value
will all depend on scarcity and rarity of the banknotes. Modern
commemorative banknotes are usually produce in quite a large number.
In this case, 1 million pieces is a huge number.. The initial craze to
get hold of one of these commemorative banknotes is tense. After a
while, nobody seem to bother with them as new commemorative ones
started to pop up here and there. Words started to spread how valuable
this new commemorative will be able to fetch in the years to come.

I think for the special numbers such as the low serial numbers 000001
000002....and the solid number one such as 111111.....888888 will be
able to fetch a good price since there is only one of each of these
nice numbers in the 1 million peices.

The next question is ....I need the 555555 and 888888 for my
collection.....*smile*...
