Default U.S. Ink Jet Cancellations

Well, it looks like the only way we'll get any more CDS cancellations
is by hand-back or courtesy cancels, if we're lucky.

I know that many Europeans are quite retentive about circular cancels,
so I guess this tosses out just about everything the U.S. cancels
these days.

We could always send larger packages with stamps on them, but that
would get too darn expensive. Then, the cancels may be in a nice red
vintage instead of traditional black.

Well, what say ye U.S. collectors of cancels? Anything to add?

I just received a packet from Sweden.

It was franked with 5 booklet panes
from the 1960s and 70s including a
Slania engraved art pane.

The panes were cancelled with a
maximum of 2 or 3 (large pane)
"sock on the nose" cancels with
a steel canceller. (None of those
messy rubber cancellers there.)

Sweden's postal clerks must be
well trained. Shame on the USPS,
Canada Post and Royal Mail for
their recent disasters arriving
in my mailbox.

In the USA, I think most post offices will also have a black ink pad. I
have often mailed letters to myself, or to interested people, and asked for
a black cancellation. They are always ready to oblige.

For the record:
Shallow Lake P.O., N0H 2K0, Ontario, Canada
uses a steel circular cancel as a matter of course.

They did use a rubber rectangular "special cancel" commemorating
something or other a while back, but the hammer is standard.

I have taken to posting our club newsletter from there and the
postmistress asked how I wanted them cancelled: SON or tied to the
cover. At our next club meeting I asked what the preference was and half
the members wanted it one way and the other half the other. I told the
postmistress that it was her choice.

One club member got quite bitter when his cancel arrived sideways one time!

Maybe its time we compiled a list of post offices using circular stamps
while they are still around. If the handle breaks on this one, I doubt
there are many spares lying around.

All the best,
Bob Watson
