Could someone tell me how to tell the difference between a half sovereign
(uk) and a sovereign. I have a coin book but the details are not sufficient
to determine what's what. I've got a 1937 George V1 gold something or other
with no perforated edge and I'm trying to work out how much it is worth.

? "oly" ?????? ??? ??????
ups.com...
The one sovereign is 22mm and weighs a little over one-quarter of a
troy ounce (coin is 0.9167 fine - 22kts - net gold is 0.2354 oz pure).
This coin is the size of a nickel, MOL.

Yes, 1937 sovereigns did NOT have a reeded edge.

Oly, I have a couple of doubles I would like to sell, most of them Edwards,
are there any dates that are rare?
Thanks!

These were only issued as proofs and go for anywhere from $350 to 900
(halfs) depending on conditionand about 3-4 times that for the Sovereign
.. Impaired proofs might go for cheaper. There is one variety which is
the matte proof and is supposedly unique. A half sovereign will be 4
grams in weight and vanish under a nickel, a sovereign (8 g) will be
just ever so slightly larger than a nickel.

No. All came as proofs, one year only. If it's a Eddie VII then it's a
one year type again (1902), but the kicker is the Syndey one (S on the
coin, often fako). There is also a proof which goes for about $200 or so
more than the circulation grade one.

If it's about the diameter of a US nickel, and weighs about 1/4 ounce, it's
a sovereign. If it's half that weight, it's a half.

A Google search on 'UK COIN SIZES' produces my web site in 3rd place out of
5280000 entries, where there is an index to help you.

Half sovereign 19.0 mm diameter
Sovereign 22.0 mm diameter
Two pounds 28.0 mm diameter
5 pounds 37.0 mm diameter

Not quite true.

The only EVII date is 1902, but both circulation and proof issues were made
at the Royal Mint. 45807 ordinary, 8066 proof.

The Sydney Mint coin (S on the ground line above the date) is proof only,
and very rare indeed.

If it's a Eddie VII then it's a
one year type again (1902), but the kicker is the Syndey one (S on the

Not quite true? 1937 are Ed VIII, all proof, one year only.. in
reference to Edward [gogu] in the context of 1937 from OP.
Then the second paragraph (had you actually read on) states about what
you said about the Ed VII 1902 MS/Pr/-S. Where's the problem?
