Returned Mail.
It's a little like life.
In 1875 one would get a pretty little label,
nowadays, (if you are lucky) you get "the finger."

For the less observant, try imitating the image on the Australian label,
it becomes apparent the finger pointing, has to be the middle digit.

Was this a naughty joke by the designer?

It appears people have been getting the finger since 1592
according to this study.
Only in Australia it appears, that the middle digit is employed.

Dead letter office when there is NO return address evident.

It is the same as your Bavarian seals.

They did appear on returned mail, where the DLO opened mail to try
and get a return address (not shown on cover).
If they were successful, then the envelope was sealed with this stamp
and the envelope was returned to sender.

I disagree. I believe we are seeing the middle finger folded, *behind*
the index finger. Look at which lines overlap which. Albeit still rude,
the gesture is with the first finger.

You're probably right,
too much flyspecking on my behalf.
I'll have to get out more
