Yes, use a knock-out block by all means - it's really the only way to
go.

But I can tell you that getting the nib and feed back in the ring is
difficult, soap or no soap, and the result is often a loose ring. This
means that the nib and feed can move a bit afterwards.

Best to leave alone if you can.

It has to be tight... That ring is what holds the nib and feed
together. If it were loose, the nib would wiggle around on the feed.
A knockout block works best for removing the feeder ring.
