yes, been there, done that. The problem is that the guys at Freeman-Tuell
(speaker reconers in Dallas) are having a problem finding a replacement
voice coil for it. They explained that they normally don't replace the VC
during recone but the epoxy had leaked down between the voice coil and
magnet during the initial recone totally botching the job. Anyhow they claim
it is a ******* size and they are trying to locate one for it now. Was
hoping someone had one pulled and ready to go.

BTW - $100 for that driver is highway robbery

You should be able to have it reconed for half that price. And if it's
a good shop, it will be just like original. I personally wouldn't worry
about it looking original, but you mention sound, and yes, you can't buy
any old same size speaker and expect it to sound the same. The people
who recone speakers normally use original parts they purchase from the
speaker manufacture, so it will sound the same.
