I got a penny as change for a dime in a store the other day, and was

Any help to find out if you don't know would be helpful as well. Thanks.

Do you have an image? It could be a non plated lincoln cent

I think I have one of those. Certainly no copper on it.

or it could
be a lincoln cent struck on a dime planchet.
It could also be an altered lincoln cent that someone either painted
silver

Possible, though more likely dipped in mercury.

or someone dipped it in a solvent and it ate the copper plating off.

Unlikely. This one is trotted out every time someone says they have a
"silver penny". Just about anything that can eat copper will probably
also vaporise the underlying zinc, which as we all know is a very poor
metal to use for coins. Nick a zinclon sometime and drop it in a weak
muriatic (if I recall the experiment right) acid bath. After a couple
days you'll have a shiny shell of copper.
