How can you copyright a work that you admit comes at least partially from
other people? Did they sign over their rights to you?

You can *claim* copyright over darn near anything you emit, but it's not
worth *defending* copyright unless it's a thing of value. When Reid
steals from other's, without attribution, in a piece for profit, he is
the one in violation of copyright, which need not be noted, registered
or applied for to be in force.
