I'm constantly amazed that the number of bank tellers that know NOTHING about
coins and currency in general

A branch manager of a Major bank told me he does not ask his tellers to be
knowledgeable in US Currency or coins. It's just not their job. Their job is
to manage deposits, transfers, and withdrawals. Anything else, a bank
specialist is called upon (for the likes of opening / closing accounts, loans,
buying CDs, etc)

Tellers are elaborate ATMachines. Or, ATMachines are elaborate tellers.
