I would like to know what you think of mint & used stamps.

In Scott (USA) & Yvert & Tellier (French) catalogue both mint & used
stamps have the same value, ( more recent ones from 1980 to nowadays)
& in Stanley Gibbons, it is the contrary, that is recent used stamps
have more value than mint (in general)

Could you tell me what is your opinion about it? I am using as
example Mauritius stamps, it may be different for other countries.

Do you consider that used recent stamps ( from the past 30 years or
so) are more valuable than mint ones or not?

Are you willing to purchase used stamps at higher than what you
normally accept for mint stamps for your collection?

My own personal opinion is that apart from a few special cases mint is
worth more than used. Generally I would expect to pay more for mint
and would almost never pay more for used examples unless the postmark
had some sort of significance that was interesting to me.

I have no idea about Mauritius, but in the UK it seems that the
majority of used stamps are cancelled with ugly wavy lines or similar.
I *think* that the prices in SG are for good cicular date stamp (CDS)
examples and the wavy line versions are worth only a fraction.

As a final thought - I can buy several bags of modern kiloware with
thousands of used stamps in, some of which will be quite collectable
for less than the cost of a years worth of mint commems.

Just my twopence worth
Mike
